The Faith Cake

True scientists say, "We are aware that our theories are not perfect, just the best fit." No claims to absolute truth are believed because none are made. There is a recognition of what we are all forced to work with. And there is a recognition that science works. This video challenges the claim that a belief in science requires equal faith to the belief in a god.

"scientists are genuinely open-minded"
perhaps more open-minded than anybody who believes in a religion, yes, but genuinely open-minded? no.
the moment somebody comes along with a new idea, no matter the profundity or genius behind it, scientists immediately reject it without consideration if it doesn`t fit into their model of the universe. now tell me that is open-minded.

does everything need the stamp of approval from science before we can believe it and not be called fools?
scientists have discovered a lot of things about the universe, but compared to how much there possibly is to know, WE KNOW NOTHING.

drugs >>>>>> science for discovering the universe within/without.

Anoniem,

You are so very wrong.

New ideas come along all the time...they just need to have a solid amount of evidence to back them up. If your idea of a grand scientific conspiracy was true, science would be static and without advances. Instead, Einstein has been corrected, Eugenics has been discredited, and the "global cooling" crisis in no longer in vogue.

both science and religion say that only by their methods may one come to know the truth..
and that`s where i call bullshit.
agree to disagree

Right...... but one you can test and gather evidence for... the other not so much.

But I suppose if universal truth for you is "How delicious can a dorito taste?" or "How fucked up can a hallucination be?" then more power to you and your Universe explaining drugs :)

^They can definitely be pretty fucked up. I have gathered much evidence on the subject.

^ And the goodness of the dorito taste can be plotted against how fucked up you are, forming a classic bell curve. As you get more fucked up, the desirability of doritos increases expodentially. However after a certain point this begins to decline, until you find yourself at a stage where you`re so fucked up that you couldn`t give a damn about doritos, or even work out what you`re supposed to do with them for that matter.

I`d agree with you on some counts - like anything that requires large amounts of research these days, it requires corporate funding, which of course changes the man-kind benefit to corporate benefit. But the new hadron collider is really taking pure research to a new level - just for pure knowledge of the beginnings of the universe, and it`s fucking expensive. See if you can get any religious organization to spend money the study of even their own "sacred" texts.

Dillinger,Bollo Delux,

You are both hired to be on my research team. Meet me at my lab (in the woods behind my house) so we can begin the science stuff doing.

Faith is something that can only exist inside ourselves, thus making it subjective. Science claims the objective. End of point. Believe what you want to for you`re entitled to it. Just don`t say we didn`t tell you so :D

I agree and disagree with this guy. While science has brought us a good bit of knowledge about the universe it is still a belief in nothing more than what you can see, smell, touch, taste or hear. It is a belief that there is nothing more to this universe than what our senses can detect or our minds can comprehend.

science is continuous, fluid, personal revolution. to face the universe without influence from anywhere but your own insight and cognition. And then propose advancment of understanding, by experimentation. It`s a scary cake when something called wisdom is not always in the mix.
Love the geek, and when judgment day comes he might just save your dumb arse.

doritos are well good.

TriMeFoo, it`s a belief that what you see and sense is real, which is backed up by the fact that everybody more or less sees the same thing (if they`re in the same situation).

Religion is a belief that what you *can`t* see or sense is real and has no absolutely common factor between everybody.

1. our senses let us see less than 1/1000000th of "reality"
2. our senses can be deceived
3. atoms are 99% empty space (no solidity)

enlighten me, slaves of science, what is real?
