500 Nations (1/4)

Part 2/Part 3/Part 4
Part One. "500 Nations is an eight part documentary on the Native Americans of North and Central America. It documents from pre-Columbian to the end of the 19th century. Much of the information comes from text, eyewitnesses, pictorials, and computer graphics." (This is a long documentary, but one of my favourites.)

i lol at the attempts to make american tribal music by mixing drums with irish-sounding instruments.

... but seriously... native americans (and that includes mexicans, and whatever else was here before the european) were taken advantage of crazy-style. beginning with the mexicans in the late 1400`s.the continent`s history is being taught at every country south of the USA. In other words, only the USA and Canada do not recognize history before the european conquerors and settlers got here (1492?), or deem it important enough to teach. this is why americans think mexicans are flooding the country... in reality, they were already here. Like in California, Texas, Colorado, Florida, and all those states that have a heavy mexican population: they were already there. White people are the newcomers that look at themselves a majority.

Err..I think you may be wrong about that buddy. History is my major at the University of Western Ontario (yeah, thats in Canada) and ive taken courses/labs that were either on the topic of history prior to contact with the indigenous peoples/tribes or at least recognized depending on the lecture content

No offense, but in my opinion, if you loss your battle may it be due to trickery or by pure bad luck, you don`t get a say on what the winner does. ALL nations are built by conquering who or whatever was there before and that is why people developed the concept of government, weapons, ownership, etc. I live in Canada and we see too many first nations people always demanding MONEY for their `sacred land` while doing nothing to improve themselves. If you consider something sacred, maybe you should ask for the land, not money, and maybe you should`ve fought harder when you lost it.

In America we`re taught about the Indians before the Europeans showed up. True Americans and Europeans devastated the Indians but who cares if the Mexicans were in California, Arizona, and Texas hundreds of years ago. Could you image what kind of shit holes these places would be if Mexico was still running them?

lmao@Pokeygorrilla...

Are you an idiot? Don`t answer that, you`d say "no" anyway.

You seriously need to grow up and get yourself a real education if you think that "Mexicans" had no culture nor intelligence. Jesus, look where they originate from, south/central Americas ring a bell?

Now let me think, what cultures come from those areas?...

@ oj:

well, if you are being taught at higher levels it is because you chose to learn. this history is not a requirement for the basic education before college.

and to those people that say that the land was lost "fair and square:" Just wait, dudes, the mexicans know that they can`t overpower the US, so they are taking the country back slowly... ninja-style... if you doubt it, count how many mexicans move into your neighbourhood in the next six months...
it`s going to happen, and you can pout all you want about it.

@sir-spanks-alot

That may be true, but that was centuries ago, the "white people" who think they are the majority were born there, so it is their home land too, we can`t change what happened in the past, and I don`t think any country is just going to give up a big chunk or their land because their ancestors took it from someone else.

And the only reason mexicans want to live in the america the settlers made is because they believe they can lead a better life here, that wouldn`t be possible if we had never come here and taken the land.

I`m sorry, but history is full of the conquerors and the conquered. If Europe was to follow our guilt-philosophy, no one would know where to begin. Even your grandmother`s grandmother wasn`t alive to see the awful things that happened here. In Canada, natives get a free education and pay no taxes. Sometimes I wish MY great great great grandmother was Native American. My argument is that there are horrible things happening to people NOW. RIGHT NOW. Lets focus our awareness on helping those people instead of helping the great grand-kids of the oppressed.

This has nothing to do with "Iraq."

But since you brought it up, we didn`t go to iraq to take their land, there "could" have been a government plot to get some of the oil, but I highly doubt it.

We shouldn`t have gotten involved, but since we have, if its a success at the end then the people will be able to live without fear of having their fingers, arms, HEADS cut off because they criticize their government.

No one should have to live under the iron fist of some psychotic Communist bastard.

mikit:

really? so... if the britfags hadn`t arrived and brought their diseases over here, we`d be living in caves?

native americans (and i`m not referring to the average white view of native americans, i`m talking about any natives in america... the continent... for all of you dumbasses that still think there is a contry named "America"), although VERY war-like, were in tune with nature. they knew how to maintain an environment. that is an art the has been foregone in pursue of efficiency, and ultimately, profits.

and my reference to irak was of the "this land belonged to me 500 years ago...so.." kind, not in the slightEst way related to your point...

i apologize for assuming you`d understand my comment considering the context.
