i saw this in my aircraft design class. my professor said the pilots had to jam down on the brakes to pull off the stunt or the plane would of went nose first into the water.

maybe having the wheels turning would cause them to submerge, whereas applying the brakes would allow them to skip across the water like a boat hull?

if u don`t hit the brakes the wheels would spin thus generate a torque. destabilizing effect which might cause the plane to go nose first into the water. if u hold brakes, the wheels will just hydro-plane across the water.
