It`s a TTD (Tested To Destruction) run, to make sure the outer frame of the engine doesn`t blow the rest of the plane up. Personally I think it`s reassuring to see how well it handles it. Very clever engineering.

The colored blade has a small explosive charge at the base, and it explodes releasing the blade. The point of this test is to see what would happen if a blade was to rip off at full speed, and if the outer shell would contain it or not.

I saw a similar test on tv when they built the Boeing 777 long ago. It`s a fan-blade failure test. They basically detach the orange blades that are attached to the big compressor fan and it can`t send stuff flying sideways into the passenger cabin or the wing. The engine on the 777 had a Kevlar jacket around it to keep the stuff inside.

Another thing they test for is the structure`s ability to dissipate the uncontrolled energy when the blade is released. It`s designed to shake as much as possible to spread it out and avoid too much of blast in one direction. Most planes that size can fly with one engine out but recovering from the spin it would otherwise produce would be very hard.
