You know why politicians don`t talk about the educational issues in this country? Because they`re getting exactly what they`ve paid for: a workforce instead of a learned public.

Just my two cents.

^ Not just your two cents my friend but a fact indeed. Read "the deliberate dumbing down of america" by Charlotte Thomason Iserbyt. Iserbyt served as Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), U.S. Department of Education, during the first Reagan Administration, where she first blew the whistle on a major technology initiative which would control curriculum in America`s classrooms. Iserbyt is a former school board director in Camden, Maine and was co-founder and research analyst of Guardians of Education for Maine (GEM) from 1978 to 2000. You can download the book free at deliberatedumbingdown.com

^ Jesus Christ, stop blaming other people. Seriously, every time a problem arises in the US all I see you, THE PEOPLE, do is pointing fingers and NOTHING more.

You wanna know the true reason your education is so shitty? It`s because you don`t actually need it. Yes, most american citizen can life a far better life than most of all the other countries without even passing through highschool. Your system does not REQUIRE you to learn, you`re too comfortable with your TV screens and cheap fast foods to care and frankly I can`t see why that wouldn`t be the case.

Here`s your solution: make the "college graduate" phrase in ANY CV for ANY job application mandatory. Stop wining like little bitches, I mean, you already know that politicians don`t give a shit about you... blaming politicians seems to be the #1 hobby in the US, STOP IT

Kids in South korea are fucking crazy. After school they go straight to cram school and study there asses off til about 1:00 AM in the morning, go home and only sleep like 5 hours and repeat. School libraries are open till 2 o`clock in the morning. Its fucking crazy over here man. Competition to get into a good college is fucking ridiculous.

I remember bout 4 years ago this one kid in my class killed himself because he got a B in his report card (Or something like that). Its very sad to see this kinda shit.

I blame the parents.

***Edit***
Hell, any college is fucking crazy hard to get into here, I BARELY made it into the suckiest college.

I AGREE WITH VIZREEL.

Yeah you fucking idiots. Stop blaming politicians who are supposed to represent you and just accept the fact that the elite want to make you drones. Who needs to be educated when you have McDonalds and a Lazyboy? NOT ME. Let the rich have their money and power. All I want is a nice bucket of chicken wings and my TV.

The only reason scores are getting better here in the UK is because the tests are getting easier.

Our education, too, is up shit creek.

Japan should not be rated amongst the top because their education system is still very rigid and conservative compared to that of the United States. Students who fall behind in their secondary schools often never have the opportunity to pursue a future education because they are categorized by their system in their ability. They take an exam similar to the SAT at the end of secondary school, but unlike in the U.S, those test results virtually decide their fate. Many "late-bloomer" Japanese students who wish to further their education come to the more liberal American colleges to get a High School equivalent education, and on to college.
The problem is, their government purposefully gear their education to be on this very list of top educational programs in the world - whereas in reality their system is really behind many nations.
I really don`t want to bash on Japan`s education system, but I have seen too many lives ruined by it,with a deceiving vale to cover up its shortcomings.

^ "The problem is, their government purposefully gear their education to be on this very list of top educational programs in the world "

All Governments do that roar2004. That`s why in America they teach `exam technique` rather than applicable learning. It`s also why every year in our British GCSE`s more people pass. The GCSE is a *competitive exam*,which means they get the results, then decide what score is a pass, depending on what people got. but every year they lower it so the government can say; more people passed this year.

Madness..

^ I live in Japan and am a graduate student, also my wife is a high school teacher. Let me tell you, Roar2004 you are spot on my man. Their education system may look good on the cover but as soon as you open the book it becomes quite clear how "good" their system is. One characteristic I don`t agree with Japan`s system is that high school is not compulsory, so many students finish middle school and stop learning and get jobs. It goes without saying they are rarely very educated people...

If you think the US has bad schools I suggest you look at this:
http://sciencewatch.com/dr/sci/08/jun15-08_1/

It shows the number of scientific articles which are being produced by each country. I admit US high schools are lacking but maybe (according to the webpage above) we make up for it by importing Japan`s, china`s and india`s smart people and get them to write research at our wonderful facilities.

More importantly though, regardless of how bad our high schools may be, perhaps our system is not so bad since university (mainly graduate school - masters/PhD) seems to be doing just fine in the U.S. with more publications then the rest of the top 5 combined.

Wow metal. I honestly thought That the Japanese did so much school work because it was a cultural thing. Like in the ancient times of where a child would train since a very young age for the career he would pursue later. I knew discipline was instilled to a certain extent by the parents. But I had no idea how over bearing it really was on the child despite the cultural differences. Thanks for informing us.

Well I`m a product of the California public schools and all I gotta say is, its cultural. If your parents don`t give a didn`t give a damn about school and going to college, than chances are neither will you.

It always used to amaze me how easy public school was growing up. I just listened in class, did whatever homework assignments that were given out, and did zero extra studying. That little effort put me at the top of every class I was in......and I`m NOT that smart.

If it wasn`t for advanced placment classes (classes where you can take a test and get college credit), I would have gotten slaughtered the minute I started college. I don`t think I ever really had to study seriously until my senior year of high school. It was definitely a wake up call.

I don`t see how this is a problem with the government considering that most private school are either worse or as bad as public school.
