A supermarket in the UK (Waitrose) has been selling these seasonal Halloween apples, which we rather like.
Early in the growing season, someone has to place a bag around every apple. As the apple develops, it grows larger of course, but since it is shielded from the sun, it doesn't ripen.
Then , when the apple is full size, the bag is removed and a small mask is attached to each apple. Within a few weeks the apple ripens, but the area covered by the mask remains paler. The mask consists of a transparent sticker, possibly of acetate. The image is printed on the sticker with opaque ink.
I remember reading about this experiment in a book of children's science experiments many years ago. Nice to see a major supermarket taking up the idea.
Of course this is a way of creating images that would have existed a long time before photography was ever invented.
