They knew a landslide was going to happen after taking several readings and tests, and they figured out the general area, thus the barriers.
They also wanted to get it on tape for learning purposes.
Or.. that`s what they said on the show I saw this on.
They also showed the aftermath, the road was in the stream quite far down the hill, scary stuff.
