Peetrie dish brains... This could lead to a more complex version of A.I. Peetrie dish zombie robots FTW

i don`t see why they haven`t figured out how to build a neuron out of silicon....

There is a lot of questions of how he did this that are unanswered...Does the Rat brains actually see what is going on, and if so how? Also what stimulus is given when they crash, does it shock the brain, so it knows it did a bad thing. I love these types of shows, but the announcer missed a lot of question`s.

dude. can you imagine if they put those cells on a tank, or a walking robot sentry?

Skynet is coming, people. Be ready!!!!!!

I understand the instructions that the X-brain are sending to the computer but, the real and critical question is: What data/information are they feeding the X-brain to get the results indicated?

They never say; it could literally be what it`s supposed to do. How does it know not to connect two neurons (learn) when it screwed-up? What signal does it get when it does something well? Entertaining but no real information was given.

Not so long ago there was a video about this subject, but they placed the "brains" inside little wheeled robots and they also had the ability to learn and even showed distinct personalities.(I think there were 4 or 5)
I remember it because it said that if they let the cells alone to grow they died, but when they stimulated them started to get different responses and then they tried the robot thing.
Anyone remembers? Care to search for it? And posting it?

@ velocity:

It depends on what you mean by "see." The game is actually "seeing" for the cells, just like our eyes "see" for our brain cells. The only thing the brain cells know is whether or not they get an electrical signal, and in what frequency/combination, and from what source, i.e. the game directly, or perhaps from a combination of other cells.

Now this part is just a guess on my end, but my guess is that the way those cells organize is based on those electrical signal characteristics I mentioned. The organization of those cells happens reflexively, and gradually changes over time in response to the stimulus provided, to become more "efficient."

I don`t think there`s a punishment involved, per se. I think the cells adapt to their task at hand--doing a "good" job continues the stimulus, and crashing probably resets the game simulation. Over time, the cells probably organize in order to continue the game simulation as long as possible.

If you wanted, you could probably teach the cells to play music by running a series of notes (through electrical signals) like reading a sheet of music--when the cells respond by playing the right sound, the notes continue, and when they play the wrong sound, the task resets. Eventually they could probably play something pretty decent. I could be wrong about all this, of course...
