P-38 Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a WWII American fighter aircraft. A very versatile aircraft, the Lightning was used for dive bombing, ground strafing and photo reconnaissance missions. The Lockheed team chose twin booms to accommodate the tail assembly, engines, and turbo superchargers, with a central nacelle for the pilot and armament. The P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in active production throughout the duration of American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to VJ Day.

Yeah, there are enthusiasts that fly them. There`s a lot of old men still in love with that bird. My grandpa still goes on about the 500 flying hours he clocked in the mighty P38.

i don`t know if it`s just me but i haven`t seen many documentaries about this plane even though it`s the one you fly in that arcade/nintendo game 1942 or is it 1943. is it because it wasn`t a dogfighting plane and fighter planes often get more attention?

On July 15, 1942 six P-38s and two B-17 bombers took off from Presque Isle Air Base in Maine headed for the U.K. After encountering bad weather, they made an emergency landing on a glacier in Greenland. All 25 crew members were rescued, but the planes were lost.
50 years later, a team tunnels through 25 stories of ice searching for the planes, finding one of the P-38s. It is brought up in pieces, restored over a decade, and flown again

^ I remember seeing a program on TV about that, was really facinating.

It`s amazing to think that even after beign crushed by all that ice they could still get it air-worthy again.

Pity they didn`t find the others.

Awesome aircraft. Yes they are still flying and even taking part in air races! The first plane that really turned the tide against the Japanese. I always wandered what would happen if they replaced the P-38`s Alison engines with Merlins. The Mustang underwent an amazing trasformation when it ditched its Alison engine for the British Merlin.

They did and do exist. It`s the same as a turbocharger ...use google before you open your know-it-all mouth.

^Same as a turbo? But a supercharger is a forced induction system driven by pulleys on the motor. A turbocharger is a forced induction system driven by exhaust gasses spinning the turbine. It`s not the same. And I can`t think of how they could possibly be put together as one unit. One of each, sure, but not as one.
