Easily Splitting H2O into O2 & H2

MIT chemists Daniel Nocera and Matthew Kanan discover a new catalyst that speeds up the splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen. The discovery may heighten interest in pollution-free fuel cell vehicles, which generate energy by combining hydrogen and oxygen chemically, emitting only water. The catalyst, made from cheap materials and working in ordinary water, may also make it easier to convert sunlight into chemical fuels, storing solar energy in much the way plants do.

Moses may have parted the water. but cobalt splits it. Cobalt > Moses.

I was trilled and disappointed at the same time:
I was expecting a "ORGANIC" catalyzator, but this is a major leap in the RIGHT direction.

BRAVO MIT! :D

To the creationist:
Where is this written in your damn bible?! FUCKERS!

Why did they emphasize getting O2? I thought we wanted H2 for the fuel cells and that we wanted to isolate H2 and discard the O2...

Interesting discovery about the cobalt pulling out oxygen but what about our energy crisis?

@skibxskatic: The O2 is needed for reintegration. The water is converted into both H and O2, then reintegrated into water. Some is lost in the process, used up as energy, so you`d still have to keep putting more water into the fuel tank. Unless of course I am missing something lol. :P

Promising concept just the same. 5/5

^ missing a point, yes.
As it is said in the video, cracking water (breaking bonds in water) requires some energy. But most of this energy is used to form the new bonds: H-H and O-O. H-H bond is not that hard to form, but formation of the O-O bond is quite energy demanding. And where comes the O-O ? From water (H2O). So the hard part in making H2 from water is actually to form O2. That`s why these guys focus on the fact that the catalyst helps production of O2, but it makes H2 too ! (and that`s what we want!)

That`s all really cool, but solar cell efficiency still sucks... so "synthetic photosynthesis" is still kind of ridiculous.

If we want clean, manageable electricity and hydrogen we should be pushing forward with High Temperature Gas-Cooled nuclear reactors. The high temperature can heat up water in an attached facility, minimize that threshold energy(in place of a catalyst, or hopefully alongside this new catalyst), then a small portion of the reactor`s electrical output can be used for the electrolysis. Electricity and hydrogen come out of one plant! Oh... and i should mention that it recycles our nuclear waste. I can`t believe we aren`t a nuclear infrastructure already!
Sorry to go off topic...i love alternative energy stuff, but it feels like the answer is already slapping us in the face and we just keep ignoring it.

Question from a non-chemist:

When we combine hydrogen and oxygen again to produce energy, do would we the same amount of water back that we used in the first place?

Is the earth`s water supply renewable or is there a finite amount?

Awesome!!! I`m all tinggly from the excitement.

@i-dawg

Nope, you still get the same amount of water. Remember E=mc square? If we were somehow able to convert O or H directly into energy, it would liberate huge amounts of energy (think nuclear explosion).

No the energy comes from the molecular bonds... I think... not a chemist.

jarcaf Don`t give up on solar energy just yet. there is still alot of potential yet. If nuclear anything can be avoided, then do so.

At least they realized early on that is wasn`t the target catalyst doing the work. :)

I love accidental discoveries, the best kind! Of course, this needs more testing. It`ll probably need years more research before it becomes viable. Instant 5/5
