Solution: Leave 1 or 2 squads in the cemetary to keep drawing the snipers fire, he has been firing at them for hours and only hit one person so it is perfectly safe. Take a couple of squads to outflank and gain access to the building. When the sniper fires again the team in the cemetary radios the team in the hotel which level he is in. Team in the hotel secures the hallways in that level and waits for the sniper to change positions and bang, problem solved.

What would they have done if those tanks weren`t there? Stayed where they were and continued to take it up the ass?

Stuff they know about the sniper:
1/ He is a bad shot, 4 hours and only one hit???
2/ He moves after each shot so there is a period of a few minutes after each shot when they are safe
3/ Regular prayers when they know they are safe.

In my book that leaves lots of opportunity to do something about it. I am sure the Marines who took Okinawa would be ashamed of that pathetic effort. What if they had sat on the beaches until everyone stopped shooting at them?

^ Sure they had opportunities to move but if you know anything about tactical warfare you would know when you do not know the terrain and you have a sniper at a higher altitude, moving around is the most stupid thing you can possible do. Sure they had prayer time as an opportunity to move to some other location but when someone’s looking down at you they see more than you do you fuck face. You would be the dumb fuck that’s going home in a body bag and having a closed casket funeral.

1: The effective range of a Dragunov rifle is about 800 yards. So, actually, the sniper was a pretty good shot, considering he was able to pin down any soldier that moved and even killed one. It`s more of a credit to the Marines and their training that he didn`t take out more of them.
2: Snipers are sneaky. Our soldiers are trained in anti-sniper tactics, so they know this fact. Had those Marines made a move toward the building (which, if you noticed, had a large wide open area in front of it with no cover), and if the sniper had changed his game plan and didn`t move after his shot, he`d have a bunch of easy targets to choose from. That would mean more dead Marines.
3: See above comment. Plus, do you really think the sniper would let the Marines come and get him during the prayer? I`d be willing to bet that he wasn`t on his knees facing east. He probably just watched their movements until the prayer ended and resumed firing.

Also don`t forget that the closer they get to the building, the easier the sniper`s shot becomes and the more exposed the Marine`s bodies are because of the angle of attack.

In my book, the only option other than using the tanks would be a better sniper using a rifle with a longer range, like the M82 .50 caliber used by Marine Corps snipers. Position the counter-sniper a couple hundred yards behind the kill-zone and wait for the enemy sniper to expose himself. But even that is pushing it, because you have to depend on a shot from a thousand yards into an obscured area, without knowing where the target will be until the last moment. If it were my ass on the line, I would have done what those Marines did: kept their heads down, used the resources available to safely counter-attack, and survive.
