I heard venal, greedy, dumbass, short-sighted, bottom-feeding piece of camel shit and still could have believed this was a real episode, as the description was still quite historically accurate.

The US didn`t train "the Taliban". They, along with Pakistan and China, trained and supplied the Mujahideen that were fighting the Soviets at the time. It wasn`t just the Taliban it was all kinds of Muslim extremists.

Saddam didn`t rise to power in `58. Quassim did however when he overthrew the king`s regime. Saddam was involved in a US backed assassination attempt on Quassim in `59 but they didn`t manage to overthrow the guy until `63. At this point Saddam wasn`t the leader, after an another internal coup and about 13 years before he actually came into dicatorial power. The CIA has very little to do with Saddam`s rise to power. Even without the support in `59 they would succeed eventually in overthrowing Quassim simply because few liked him.

BrightRO: The are loads of internal record which are open to the public which show exactly what and where the CIA did things. Stuff like this is not something which are kept secret for more than a a few decades at most, the CIA knows that the media doesn`t report it since they`ll only get called anti-american and most people don`t either care or have the time to find out. The only things which are kept secret for long periods of time are usually military technology and things like COINTELPRO. What the CIA does around the world either leaks or is declassified after a few years and the same is true with most intelligence agencies around the world unless they are in strict dictatorship and/or don`t keep a record of it.

^ Feel worshipped.

Btw:
After both Soviets and US support were withdrawn from Afghanistan, the whole country went up in smoke pretty much because of a political power vacuum - the former democratic system had been overthrown and reinstated by the Soviets. So, after the communist leaders and supporters were gone (could have been the late 70s, correct me if I`m wrong), the formally united Mujahideen clan leaders fought over what was left, resulting in years of turmoil and destruction all across the already torn-up land.

Those clan leaders are today`s warlords, and actually, it was the Taliban who finally brought peace to the region.
At that time, barely anyone wanted to believe what kind of force they`d use to push their ideals.
However, it`s a common misconception that the Taliban are just a (re)source for today`s terrorists or made of pure evil. They were surely suppressive, surely their motives were more than questionable, especially the way of carrying them out - yet they brought peace to a war-struck people, which no one was able to do before.
