Electric cars don`t use gasoline but they still aren`t environmentally safe. You still most likely use coal or nuclear power to charge up.

^^ How about RENEWABLE ENERGY powering the electric cars. Not that far fetch if you think about it. BTW this is from the movie who killed the electric car. Awesome car too bad we had Bush and king oil get in the way of progress. Toyota and Hyundai are comin out with electric plug-ins that get 100 miles per charge. GE is comin out with a plug-in that gets 40 per charge. How about give money to Tesla Motors that are building plug-ins that get 200 miles per charge and are built in the USA.

Awesome movie, loved it

^tokentiki- even factoring in coal, oil and nuke power plants, electric cars STILL produce about half as much pollution as gasoline cars. How about you actually try LEARNING about something about something before criticizing it.
If only there was some sort of simple audio/video presentation regarding electric cars you could watch....

P.S.: has anyone else seen the weak-ass production model of the volt? Forget bailout denial, put their logo on a pike as a warning to others!

/start internet fight

Well sum guy I said they aren`t environmentally safe... is that some sort of problem to you? Do you have some sort of stick up your ass that makes you lash out at people that make a simple factual statement? Something you obviously can`t interpret? hmmm? Perhaps you are the one that could use a simple audio/video tape instructional on how to pump all your daddys cum out of your ass? Hmmmm?

/end internet fight

just b/c your half the fat doesn`t mean your fat free

I don`t like it when the term "renewable energy" gets thrown around. No energy is renewable.

I do agree with tokentiki`s first post, but for different reasons. The coal-electric companies are still going to burn the coal regardless whether you use it to charge your car or not. Its eco friendly initially, but in the long run, its worse than conventional cars. You have the chems in the batteries and the processes to manufacture them as well as the electric motors.

And NO BAIL OUTS. injecting MORE money into the economy will and is killing the value of the US dollar. Do what most of the intelligent people have done and convert to gold. You gain more interest in the value going up (or as some of us look at it, the dollar going down, in relation to gold), its internationally excepted and you don`t have to worry with your investment going bust.

@akz^ Renewable energy is any energy that is fully replenished within the foreseeable future. This means that solar, wind, tidal, and geothermal power are ALL renewable sources. The first three are replenished/provided by the sun and moon(tidal).

Also, the chemicals in Li-Ion and Li-Poly batteries ARE environmentally friendly compared to any other battery technology. Stop reading green-peace websites and read a textbook.

After all things are considered, plug-in electric vehicles are significantly more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel vehicles, but the high cost of Li- batteries make them economically difficult to justify.

@wizguy34 The only reason the Tesla gets that much mileage is because it has a $40K battery, which you have to replace after 7 years.
The Chevy Volt actually uses the most advanced battery technology of any car to date, a thin-film Li-Ion battery. It is new technology and relatively cheap since to produce the batteries you literally print layers of p and n materials onto a substrate that are about 5 microns thick. Stacking hundreds of layers gives you a powerful battery. They can also be printed so that it is easy to replace single cells instead of the whole battery pack like the Tesla and Prius require.

The Volt is by far the most promising electric car, and most auto companies are taking GM`s design and suiting it to their own future cars.

The problem with that car was the fact that it didn`t work in colder climates. The batteries didn`t hold a charge properly. The other thing not discussed is a possible undisclosed safety issue that might have hurt a future release of electric cars by GM or other manufacturers. Then there is the issue of the average fuel economy going down over the past few years. The market is clearly consumer driven. If consumers want big cars, suvs, and trucks, then yes the average will go down. This is consumer driven, it has nothing to do with car companies.
I have two kids that require car seats and a stroller. I looked at the prius and similiar hybrids and they just don`t work for me, I can take the kids shopping, but I better not buy anything for fear of having no place to put it. That doesn`t even include taking them on vacation. Those cars are great for old farts that putter around town and that`s it.
This is where someone will say, they have a Chevy Tahoe hybrid now. That`s great, I get the same gas mileage in a dodge ram with their multi-cylinder shut off system, and they want 45k for the damn tahoe.
Sorry, but consumer demand killed this car, it wasn`t seen as a viable vehicle for the masses, and GM had already pumped tons of money into it and didn`t want to lose more.

It is not our respondsibility to keep business` a float. Companies big and small are born and go down everyday. Why should banks and car makers be any different. In the case of the recent recession and bailouts, why didn`t "Ma & Pa`s Bakery" get a bailout, or "Bill`s Lighting and Heating" and every other small business that went down get bailed out.

I even have a small Home based business, and recently it isnt doing so hot, should I be getting a bailout? I wouldn`t object to it (who wouldn`t turn down a free hand out), I personaly don`t think so though. I`m working on altering my business practice and adapting. I accept full respondsibility of the out come of my business in good or bad times. As should these major corporations.

Why should the taxpayer be forced to bail them out. Let the big car companies aquire a loan from the banks or financial service provider like everyone else has to.. oh wait..
