mortars have good targeting system those guys are not very smart. You need a spoter to let you if your off a degree or if you need to go left or right. Mortars are better for large groups of soldiers.

I was a mortarmen and i can tell u that they were wasting alot of rounds. He was just eyeballing his targeting which is what you do when u dont have alot of time to set up for targeting but as you can see it was already set up which is what is always done. Pintsz is right by saying u need a forward observer who directs your rounds. These guys probably don`t see alot of action so you get what you see here when they do.

^It is random-sort of, but as the saying goes `close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades` A morter is just a big hand grenade and if one goes off near you you`re toast. A morter finished my dads career in Vietnam. He spent a long time in Japan recovering from his wounds.
