cost is _the_ factor. socializing health care is the worst posible way to `fix` our health care problem on the table. Go read some of the horror stories of Canadian and British health care. there are literally thousands of people who come to the US to receive emergency tests and care every year because the wait is so long in their home countries. people come here for basic CAT scans due to possible tumors that would require 6 month waits in their home country. in 6 months you could be dead from a brain tumor.

now, i agree that reducing cost is necessary; but having the government run it is not the answer. making it free (which there is no such thing) is not the answer.

the medical industry is the only industry that does not reduce cost as technology increases. biopharma (drugs) have the highest markup of any industry on the planet. its not uncommon to see drugs that have a cost that exceeds the price of production by 5,000%. of course manufacturing costs are low and its the R&D that costs the big bucks; you can see the point im making.

as it stands now with an health care system that relies on personal health insurance, doctors want to over-medicate. every test they can perform, every treatment they can provide, puts money in health care pockets. the only downside to this is maybe your doc will tell you to opt for the kidney transplant because he wants a new cadilac in his driveway when really you could probably get by with the kidney you have. but one thing is clear, they have found that your kidney is not 100%.

the alternative socialized system is very different. when you walk into a hospital you have a $ amount over your head. every test or treatment performed takes money from the provided $ allotment. when your $ amount reaches 0, you are SOL. of course no one will say that bluntly. also, when everything is "free" you go to the doc for the slightest issue as all you need is time, this creates huge waits.

the second major shortfall of the socialized system is the reduced pay to the medical professionals. as with any socialized system the pay is set. the best heart surgeon in the country is just another heart surgeon on the list. if he is going to make the same as all the others, he receives no additional compensation or have the ability to sell his higher quality service for a premium. the incentive for top-of-their-field professionals disappears, and shortly thereafter they will as well. why stick around here and make the same peanuts as the jokers when you can open up shop in another part of the world and reap the benefits of your hard work and talent?

the reason we have a problem today is because of insurance. insurance is one of the biggest frauds in the history of scams. the reason insurance is able to run rampant like it does is because of low oversight and political lobby.

^(insert every argument against universal health care here) and then, "the reason we have a problem today is because of insurance." Really? "The" reason? I also missed your idea for a solution in all of that. I for one am for universal health care. "Go read some of the horror stories of Canadian and British health care. There are literally thousands of people who come to the US to receive emergency tests..." In any system; regardless of where it is geographically or what the system is, there is going to be people that bitch and are not happy with the system. Out of 100 cases of universal health care that I have heard from Canada, France, and Britain, 80 of them are good. Most people from these places that you have mentioned whom comment on Spiked have all said they are perfectly happy with the system, not that it`s perfect.

you dint see my suggestion for a better system because i did not mention one. forcing people to use the state sponsored heath care system and not allowing them to pay for heath care that they want is criminal. if i have the resources to pay for a cat scan today, but am told i cant for what ever reason, is messed up. i don`t care if 80 of 100 people suffering from a common cold are OK with how they received treatment for it. its the people who show symptoms of advanced brain tumors but are told they have to wait 6 months for a CAT scan that i do worry about. it has nothing to do with people bitching.

and yeah, i stand behind my statement that allowing un-regulated insurance practices dictate costs and treatment is the main reason why health care is so expensive in this country. care to provide a rebuttal?
