I`m no physics expert, but shouldn`t they have kept all other variables constant (ie stationary dummy OR person running towards tackler) to ensure their force readings are comparable?

I wouldn`t take this video at face value, first pharb is right about the variables, although I think that would kinda be hard due to the type of experiment since rugby and football have different styles.

The best way to get actual data would probably get a bunch of rugby and football players to do the same experiment. By doing the experiment a few hundred times they would be able to find like a correlation between players weights and speed with the corresponding hitting power. If they had done that I would then believe there data to be more credible. Also if you really want to go into the data, they could have seen if different hitting techniques made a diffrence.

So overall the best way is to do the same experiment a bunch of times and find correlations.

From what I`ve seen this show has a cool concept, but the "science" behind it comes straight out of their asses.

It`s all been said the variables are not constant and i think it`s just national pride coming out the a-hole.

how exactly is this a fair experiment? The rugbly player is picked up during the tackle and is not a rigid dummy as in the football experiment.

Don`t believe the hype people - rugby is the toughest - hands down.

The amount of force applied should be the same except obviously the protected one will feel the same force except dispersed. That`s what pads are designed to do. The evolution of pads has allowed for bigger hits without getting hurt. So the the question is who can hit harder without getting hurt. The answer is obvious, but what hurts more?

well, first off the football player was a quarterback... that should limit your thoughts about how hard a football player can hit. If he was a free safety then i might be more prone to believe this, but what quarterback tackles people?

Imagine if you put padding on the rugby player how much harder they would try to hit without the threat of as much injury not having pads means.

And then take the padding off a football player and see how long he lasts without pads in a rugby setting, he`d be destroyed.

One target was mobile and one was stationary. i think it you need to take that into account. the dummy left hanging on its own two feet would be i different story. or let the padded guy hit the rugbe guy;

glad most of u have noticed how unscientific that was... bit of a dumbass idea anyway really, any scientist would know F=ma, pads work in the same way as an airbag, they lengthen the time of the impact and therefore reduce the acceleration and therefore reduce the force, a 100kg rugby player will hit exactly the same as a 100kg nfl player, just with pads it won`t hurt as much.

The Rugby League guy should have done a shoulder charge on the dummy, would doubled that nfl hit and given us results to compare league and union. Plus that was a shit tackle from the no pads guy, straight to ground hurts like a bitch.

um...
Shelford made his Test debut for the All Blacks later that year against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous "Battle of Nantes" in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford`s groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand where he witnessed the All Blacks lose 16–3. To this day Shelford has no memory of the game.
