Wow, I really hate bush but he has the right idea when it comes to unions. They have crippled every industry they have their hands in. Unions were greta when people were getting mangled in machines and working 15 hours a day for 10 cents and hour, but those day are long gone and unions are obsolete and a drain. Kill the unions and save America.

^So when Caterpillar forces their workers to sign a contract stating that Caterpillar can choose to call in worker on overtime for no extra pay, the workers aren`t allowed to even mention unions, not allowed to wear t-shirts which might be conesidered supportive of unions and the list goes on like that, it`s totally fine with you?

Unions are basically the only way for workers to even have a say in their work, without them they are basically paid slaves, forced to work for minimum waged which in any other developed industrial country in the world is considered borderline slave wages. You can`t say shit about anything that has to do with how the corporation is run or your own work, your only option is to either obey or leave.

A few months ago I talked with an American that had just gotten a job at Burger King. Of course the pay was minimum wage, about 6 bucks an hour. He thought that was extremely generous and good of the King to give so much money. He was kinda stunned when I told him you get about three times that just by flipping burgers in any developed european country even with taxes counted. So according to your argument the uninon is "crippling the industry", then why is Burger King making a profit in the european market? It`s a very simple argument and it`s very true that the average European worker is better paid and has a better working environment.

Unions have not crippled industries, they have however lowered the wages of CEOs and improved the work place in both terms of safety and how it is managed. Of course in the US there are basically no unions at the moment, haven`t been since the 80s when Reagan just said he wouldn`t enforce any kind of law like the ones that came about through things like the Wagner act. As such the wages of the average American worker as either been stagnant or has declined, working hours have increased and industrial accidents have increased. Some people work with wages which have been the same since the 50s!

From personal experience I can tell you that any industrial worker in the EU dread the day they might have to go to America to seek work. Sure they don`t have it perfect here, most do extremely hard work and you can lose your job at a moments notice, but that`s nothing compared to the condition they`d have to be forced to work with in America.

Unions are the only way for workers to have a democratic say in their corporation and work. If you don`t like democracy fine, but don`t kid yourself or lie to me when you say unions have "crippled every industry they have their hands in".

Tada.. i live in a town overrun by unions..

and guess what.. out of the top 24 cities in Canada ours has the worst economy.. Unions dont do anything usefull these days.. the workers are overpaid, overprotected and undereducated.. you have line workers who put 8 bolts on a transmission 8 hours a day 6 days a week who are getting paid more (when you include benefits) than triage nurses!..

there have been many cases where workers have stolen tools, materials, parts and get caught.. you would think they get fired but no.. the company gets fined and the worker gets a week vacation before the company is forced to hire him back..

why do you think the big 3 automakers are getting raped right now with losses.. UNION WAGES..

you go to any car dealership and you are looking at paying over $40,000 for a god damn G6.. if im dropping 40 grand im getting a nice sports car.. or hell a car and a truck for that matter..

anyone who says unions are good doesnt live in a town thats being raped by union companies or is involved with a union..

"unions are the only way for workers to have a democratic say in their corporation and work"

you are clearly an idiot.. i have first hand experience of what Unions do.. they only hurt the company.. when jobs are already hard enough to find and keep in my town union workers are going on strike for more money and job security..

fuck anyone who works in a Union.. Consider Windsor a Ghost town sooner or later if they dont change the way they work..

p.s after whining to the government for aid the government finally gives the CaW 80 million $$ to help bring back jobs and what do they do? they shoot the prime minister the finger and say we want more..

get fucking real... unions have served their purpose.. now they are just overstaying their welcome

Couldn`t agree more...
The economy crisis right now is worst than ever and the `Union` are expecting to have more wages. What the hell are they thinking? It`s not like the company have not suffer enough and the `Union` are expecting even more.

There should be times when it is reasonable to increase wage and job security but not when the company and businesses are at the point of shutting down, it is totally ridiculous.

Because of stuff like this, no one wants to start a business in Canada because all the `Union` know is to whine. Before they know it, there won`t be anymore `Union` because there won`t be anymore fucking jobs. -_-

Sabbs: I never said that unions should be allowed to run rampant or they only brought good, but I can promise you that if unions just stopped existing in your town, the workers would eventually be underpaid, undereducated and working in a generally unsafe place.

"you are clearly an idiot.."

If you look up what the textbook idea of democracy is you`ll see that unions are a perfect example of democracy. Sure it`s fine if you don`t think democracy is needed or should be in the workplace. Workers should just do what their told or fuck off, that`s generally the idea that most people with a position with power have.

Tada, so workers shouldn`t have to do the job they were hired to do? You do your work or you fuck off seems about right.

If I get paid enough to work a union job I could really care less. I`ll pay my union dues and go on with my happy self. But then again, I`ve rarely had any experience with unions.

I`ve been "protected" by a union. Didn`t help me in getting laid off.

The company where I work is not unionized. We use threats of unionization if management get a little big for their britches, but we really have no interest in such an organization.

We are not getting paid minimum wage, nor are we making money hand over fist. Given that we need some brains, but not a university education, that seems fair.

HOWEVER... I`ll consider getting rid of all unions as soon as companies get rid of corporations and other forms of limited liability.
