Government form for security. That is the only reason we have governments. Look at any political philosopher and he will tell you this. This is also completely normal. Wanna look at the pie chart during the cold war? The Pentagon section was a hell of a lot bigger.

yes but that "war" wasnt about THEFT, you know of oil, so thats a bit different, mainly because the enemy during the cold war wasnt imaginary!

Daleran: Sure the relative size of piece of the budget that goes to the "defense" used to be much bigger, but the government has started to spend more money on other things. The amount of cash that is straight into the Pentagon is at an all time high and they are asking for much more for 2009:

Since the Soviet Union collapsed, The US and Sweden are the probably the only industrial countries that haven`t decreased their annual military budget.

But sure, the idea that governments are there to protect us is fairly accurate. However the kind of spending we see in America is way disproportional to the kinds of threats we see in the world. You spend more money on military forces then the rest of the world combined! Even if you cut it to 25%, it would still be enough to lay waste to any country in the world within a week.

The only threat that exists are from relatively small terrorist cells which are capable of fighting a geurilla war against the US. That is something which most countries in Europe has lived through. Britian faced the IRA, Germany faced Bader-Meinhof. Even you had the Unabomber, who sure was only one guy but ONE GUY managed to do some pretty extraordinary things. And even so, the matter is not for the military to deal with, it`s up to the police of the country to prevent and deal with those things.
