I don`t agree with him on everything, but I will say that religion does kill spirituality.

Praying, for example, is just a another form of meditation, but the person doing it doesn`t see it like that. They think they are talking to another entity which hears and answers their wishes, when in reality they are really just talking to themselves. Until religious people open the doors of perception they will never know true spirituality.

Sabbs, the type of freedom you`re talking about is a "no-responsibility" freedom. I don`t think that`s quite what he had in mind. In today`s "democratic" societies, where everyone is considered equal, your freedom ends where another person`s freedom begins. If it was anything else, then some of us would be more "equal" than others. The freedom he`s talking about is freedom from religious influences on the lives of people who do not share such views. Things like abortion clinic bombers, teaching creationism in schools, churches not paying taxes yet preaching for a certain presidential candidate, crazy Muslims calling for jihad, and likewise. Also, there are many problems that are either being covered up or not treated as harshly as they should be just because religion is involved. For example, all the weird shit that happens in various religious sects (old men marrying 12-year-old girls and getting them pregnant), pedophile priests who rape teenage boys and try to cover it up, etc.

Freedom is essentially free. There are no rules to make you free, no choice to make you free, and no boundaries to make you free. Faith is believing freedom is free. Religious institution are made to make guidelines for our lives, but just like in every good street sports, rules are made to be obeyed and disobeyed. Happyness is freedom and its always free.

It is and always will be a mental crutch for Catholics. What makes the church so evil is praying off of that need.
