Hack A Shaq Prank

Suns center Shaquille O`Neal took offense with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich`s liberal use of the Hack-a-Shaq strategy during the first round of the playoffs last year, calling it "a coward move." Now fast forward to Wednesday night`s Suns-Spurs season opener:

"Hack-a-Shaq is the name commonly ascribed to a basketball defensive strategy initially instituted in the National Basketball Association (NBA) by former Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson to hinder the scoring ability of the Chicago Bulls, specifically their poor free-throw shooter, power forward Dennis Rodman. However, it ultimately became better-known for its application against center Shaquille O`Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers, the team for which O`Neal played at the time. The strategy would be applied during specific phases of the game and consisted of intentionally committing a personal foul against O`Neal every time that his team took possession of the basketball."

Shaq is great at moving the ball down court and at getting the ball. He can also dunk easily. But he is horrible at making free throws. So a common strategy in basketball is when Shaq has the ball, you foul him. This means that he goes to the free point line to make to free throws, but since he sucks at it, it gives the other team an easy way to get the ball back.

Somebody correct me if I`m wrong:
It is a strategy that is meant to slow down the other teams momentum and also to stop the clock, it is meant to be done near the end of the game when a team is down in points and the clock is running down (not enough time). By committing a personal foul the clock would stop, and the player which the foul was committed on would then take free throws. The term Hack A Shaq is used because the strategy involves committing a personal foul on Shaq. In theory what this is supposed to do is allow the losing team to catch up since Shaq kinda sucks on the free throws, and at the same time gain possession of the ball and stop the clock.

this wasn`t done in ordinary hack-a-shaq circumstance. shaq had been complaining about how popovich used it in the playoffs excessively. popovich did this as a complete joke after those comments hence the thumbs up and big smile haha
