Those rounds were way to overpowered to be firing out of a tube that small. My bet is that the tube was old and the rounds were some new high velocity stuff or they went to Iraqi-Lowes and bought a aluminum fence post and called it a mortar tube.

Metal fatigue of the tube, combined with rapid drop firing of the rounds.

A motar has little bags (4) of removable propellant charge attached to the bottom of the round. Depending on how far you want the mortar to travel, you pull off the powder bags. More bags = more distance = greater burst within the tube.

In this case, the tube failed and caused the round to detonate. Allah`s snackbar indeed.
