shit that is awesome, wonder how the energy required for cooling compares with the energy used in a conventional train... anyone got an educated guess?

^It`s not that simple. It depend of how it`s used.

The real power of that technology can only be unleashed in a air-free tunel, where basically 0 friction is involved. Meaning, you could push a 200 tons train with your hands and it could make it all the way to China.(figurately speaking)

actually, the decelerating effects of air drag are avoided by changing the polarization of the magnets in the rails in order to speed up the train. The train, theoretically, could reach speeds exceeding the sound barrier. So, the technology is viable, from a physics point of view, regardless of what conditions the train operates in.

So you would have to keep refilling the train?

^Maybe you could use the passing magnetic fields to generate the electricity for a recirculating chiller unit. Electricity will still have to operate the magnetic tracks.

It won`t be cheap, but it`ll be efficient.

hah that is really amazing.
I wonder how long before they try this on a full sized test track.

This made my night. We really do need this kind of stuff though; we are, after all, living in the 21st century. It`s time for these kinds of things and flying cars and what not.

There are a variety of methods of getting nitrogen this cold without using too much energy such as evaporative cooling and whatnot so that`s not the issue. What is an issue is the entire new infrastructure required to allow these trains to run.

It would be neither cheap nor efficient. It would require a monster of a cascaded phase changer to keep the liquid nitrogen as a liquid... as you can see in the video ln2 quite violently boils off at room temp, so it would require a constant flow of ln2 with the heated up gas being re-condensed into a liquid. The technology is there but it simply isn`t viable. Which is a shame since this would give us such wonderfull inventions as the hoverboard :(

In fact, train is already more efficient than cars and airplanes. The only problem with trains is you can go only where the rails go.

i would be waaaaaaaaaaay too freaked out to get in a monorail that runs along the side of a building that`s held up by just magnetism.
