So it went from being a Celtic tradition, to a Church tradition, to an Irish tradition, to finally, an American tradition.
It also works it`s way up from a mostly harmless festival, to a day of extortion. Bribe me, or get vandalized!

Makes me like the day all the more now.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. We should get a week off school for it.

In Scotland the act of dressing up and visiting peoples houses is or was known till recently as "guising" (as in disguise).

Pranks were not a part of the traditional Scottish celebration. Guisers were expected to perform some kind of entertaining act (poems, songs, dances or jokes) in return for rewards of candy and money.

The lanterns carried by the guisers were made of a turnip or tumshie as it was known (the pumpkin is a New World modification).

These customs are dying out now and being replaced by the American versions. The English until recently never really celebrated Halloween to the same extent although they do so now, again due to the Americanisation of their culture.
