Why is the magnetic field not spherical?

Im not sure what the term is, but the Liquid Nitrogen does something to the magnetic field causing it to repel rather than attract. Thus, floating magnet.

^^ it actually was doing both. Did you not see that they pulled the magnet out with the magnet?

it could be that the edges of the magnet (the part in direct contact with the liquid nigtrogen) could have their polarity switched to repel while the middle still attracts causing that effect that the metal was "stuck"

just speculation i`m not scientist but that is all i could think of.

Here`s my speculation:

When you stick a magnet to iron, the atoms in that iron all rotate to line up with the circular magnetic field that`s being induced into it. That`s what causes a sympathetic magnetic effect in the iron.

Remember that magnetic fields aren`t just straight lines between objects, they`re loops that circle around the magnet kind of like a donut.

This metal was super-chilled so it locks up those atoms into their configurations. It can`t adjust the configurations without external force and energy, so the magnetic field stays put and so does the magnet at its source.

Maybe...
I guess the other possibility is that it`s a piece of chilled superconductor which has an induced ELECTRIC field because of the magnet, and that new electric field creates an opposing magnetic field that props up the magnet. Maybe like an exaggerated eddy-current effect?

Any real physicists here? I need to know so I can start building my hover-car.

Hence the introductory energy engineering for the flying car.

This is really tough to explain without diagrams.
This effect occurs because the superconductor (once at critical temperature) is a perfect diamagnetic. If you want to learn more, just search for superconducting diamagnetics or meissner effect.

Forget that, just give me the anti-gravity belt.

Duckee, if that was true then the magnet would of not picked up the bottom one

It`s called superconductivity. Research it.

Does anyone know how many of the same video do we have on spiked? and they just always make it to the front page, but when i put up a video i always get B*tch at then eventually deleted. Its like they hate me or something,

Watch i bet I`m gonna get voted down for this comment

its a superconductor that reaches its critical point with a rare-earth magnet... (also called neodinum magents... not sure how its spelled in english)

the superconductor is basicly a ceramic (brittle)
that obtains very specific property of 0 or close to zero resistance when below critical temperature...

its actualy a very big field of study in materials engineering right now so find a substance that can get its critical temperature and superconduct while in everyday conditions...

first person to make and apttent it is the next bill gates
