Doctors Warning: Rash From Mobile Phones

LONDON (Reuters) - Doctors baffled by an unexplained rash on people's ears or cheeks should be on alert for a skin allergy caused by too much mobile phone use, the British Association of Dermatologists said on Thursday.

Citing published studies, the group said a red or itchy rash, known as "mobile phone dermatitis," affects people who develop an allergic reaction to the nickel surface on mobile phones after spending long periods of time on the devices.

"It is worth doctors bearing this condition in mind if they see a patient with a rash on the cheek or ear that cannot otherwise be explained," it said.

The British group said many doctors were unaware mobile phones could cause the condition.

Safety concerns over mobile phones has grown as more people rely on them for everyday communication, although the evidence to date has given the technology a clean bill of health when it comes to serious conditions like brain cancer.

"In mobile phone dermatitis, the rash would typically occur on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin," the group said in a statement.

"In theory it could even occur on the fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons."

Nickel is a metal found in products, ranging from mobile phones to jewelry to belt buckles and is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, according to the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

Earlier this year Lionel Bercovitch of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and colleagues tested 22 popular handsets from eight different manufacturers and found nickel in 10 of the devices.

I think is more because people dont clean off there cell phones.

Have you seen how fucking dirty it gets?
All the dirt, oils and sweat from your face just right there, on the phone.

Just my humble opinion.
Cause there really aren`t that many cell phones with Metal on the face plates.

Maybe Radiodermatitis?

I think I just found my Health Physics research topic for next semester! That`s right i`m a nerd.

Yes because you clearly know more than doctors. Yes all the stuff normally on your skin is touching your skin, clearly that causes the rash. Being allergic to Nickel sounds plausible.

^ yes but how many fucking cellphones actually have Nickle plating or otherwise on the face?!

I am not saying I know as much or more than doctors,
Although i am in the field and valiantly trying to be one.
Plus they themselves are stumped and they said it in the story.

And it just seems a little more plausible that it might be an infection from constant contact to sweat, oils, and dirt.
Comparable to a jock itch.

So there you are. Great Britain, that rash is a Jock itch!
lol!

^Although the razr is VERY popular... and it`s probably got nickel on its keypad.

So I guess there`s a whole list of possibitities:

Metal allergies- Some people are highly sensitive to nickel, and lots of people have metallic phones... so it seems plausible.

Oil/dirt causing infection- Could be... but when I personally can`t see the screen through the layer of oil and dirt, I think it`s time for a scrub down. Also, we`d see identical symptoms from household phones.

Prolonged heat rash- It can damage blood vessels and lead to eczema, although most people stop talking when their ear feels like its on fire. Then again, some people wouldn`t even hang up if they were actually on fire.

Radiation Cocktail- I`m in school to be a Radiation Health Physicist, and while I don`t believe most of the hype on cellphone brain cancer and such, I`m also finding that we still know VERY LITTLE about low-dose effects of radiation. Everything we know about it is really just an educated guess based on watching people die of high-dose radiation poisoning.

Keep in mind we`re not just using the old cell antennas anymore... LOTS of phones are able to put out GSM, GPS, 802.11G(WiFi), AND Bluetooth all at the same time.
If any testing was done about cell phones and tissue damage it probably didn`t include WiFi and GPS frequencies. When I turn either of those antennas on in my phone the battery drains like crazy. That means LOTS of energy is being converted into radio waves(radiation) right next to your face. That`s generally a bad thing.

Most importantly, I should mention that the first time doctors EVER began to notice radiation damage in the nineteenth century was because of skin rashes from overexposure to X-Rays. It`s called radiodermatitis. Before that, they had NO idea that radiation was a bad thing and for a while they were stumped as to why these rashes were appearing. These doctors are stumped as to why cell phones are causing rashes... i`m just gonna go ahead and draw the obvious parallel.

I`m not trying to scare you guys or be an egghead about this or anything, but personally I`m gonna be using the speakerphone a lot more often just in case the cellphone cancer crybabies were right.

Just google "radiodermatitis" and "cell phone radiation". See what you think.

^ You Do have some good points.
But then again, the story doesn`t identify what size or shape it is of.
So we are lacking in the description department. :-)
