IL- A parking ticket can ruin anyone's day, but imagine one attached with a bill for more than $9.5 million.
That's what recently came in the mail for Barbara and Lee Mitchell of Glencoe.
The Village of Glencoe's notice, dated Sept. 30, detailed the offense: parking longer than allowed in the 300 block of Tudor Court in downtown Glencoe in late August.
The fine for such an offense? $9,501,071.
The notice offered that the Mitchells were entitled to a hearing on the matter, however it also warned that if it remained unpaid after a guilty determination, the vehicle could be immobilized or a driver's license could be suspended.
Oh, and "do not send cash," it noted.
Upon receiving the notice, Lee Mitchell said he was eager to talk with his wife about the incident.
You would think Glencoe officials would be happier that folks are shopping longer than two hours in the vicinity, Barbara Mitchell told her husband. Also, upon getting the ticket, it was Barbara's understanding she had just received a warning from police.
Sure enough, Glencoe police have since pulled up the parking ticket.
It was indeed a 'warning only' citation, but Glencoe Deputy Chief Mike Volling said he's at a loss to explain why it went out with the listed dollar amount. "Somebody obviously messed up when it was entered into the computer," he said.
The Mitchells have one explanation. They say the dollar amount of the ticket coincides with the vehicle's license plate.
It was a big dollar amount, but Lee Mitchell didn't appear too worried.
"I guess it's one way to increase revenues," he joked. "It's not going to work exactly with me, but it might work with somebody else."
