Red Alert / C&C storylines were always interesting because they showed an alternate possibility to our own Earth. What if there was no WWII? Bingo - massive USSR. No WWII = No UN = Global Defense Initiative.

Now when the fuck did Japan get gargantuan robot samurai ?! I`m a little fuzzy on the whole chronology of the C&C Universe, especially when they throw in time travel, but the technology level in this was miles ahead of even the Tiberium-smothered era of C&C.

... and lightsabres?!

Although Tim Curry is always great.

The Soviets went back in time to kill Einstein. this led to a much stronger Soviet Union, which reduced the power of the Allies when they didn`t have Einstein`s prism and other assorted scientific stuff. With a weaker America, Japan was free to develop it`s military and attack the Soviet Union.
