'MyKey' Sets Limits For Teen Drivers

Ford Motor has found a new way for parents to keep teen drivers in check when they lend them the car, the company said Monday.

MyKey, a car key with a chip, can be programmed to curtail the top speed of its user to 80 mph.

The MyKey will come standard with the 2010 Focus coupe and eventually will be available on other Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models, according to Ford.

In addition to implementing a speed limit, the key can be used to limit the volume of the car stereo system and emit a chime for six seconds every five minutes until the driver puts on a seatbelt.

MyKey can also be programmed to chime once each time the car reaches 45 mph, 55 mph, and 65 mph to alert young drivers about their acceleration.

Another feature, useful to anyone who fails to notice when the fuel light goes on, chimes when the car is 75 miles from empty. (The light on a Ford usually goes on at 50 miles to empty.)

The new gadget is part of Ford's Driving Skills for Life program, which is dedicated to educating drivers not only about safety but also on techniques for reducing fuel consumption.

This is a plus for the safety for the teenagers! And minus 1 billion for ruining the fun of the teenagers....

If it`ll stop asshole teenagers from swerving in and out of lanes at top speeds in an effort to make them look like they`re "good at driving", I`m all for it.

20y/o technology mixed with half thought out marketing. 80mph is plenty fast to kill yourself in a crash.

lets teach the kids personal responsibility, and they can choose to drive safely, or die.

80mph is still very fast and very race-able, if the parents want the kids to learn they might as well tag along and build fundamental knowledge from the ground up. Dont just let them go on the road alone.

and plus, no one drives a Ford

lol i kid, i have a focus myself, i guess that makes me a no one eh?

I heard they tried making something like this for women, but they couldn`t program the car to drive itself.

That is phenomenal. Annoying at first, but has the potential to save one retarded teen.

You kidding me? Volume control? That`s the smelliest pile of shit in this article.. everything else seems okay, except that volume control, why not let us teenagers kill our own eardrums?

maybe this is a california thing, but the majority of drivers i see being douchebags on the road are white guys with sunglasses and vagina-esque beards, in huge trucks, with soccer moms in SUVs. I drive a Civic Si and I don`t tail gate, but I sure do slam on my breaks when I`m going 85-90 mph and I can see the wrinkles of a middle aged woman in my rear view mirror.

Sure, teenagers/young adults are in the mix of driving wrecklessly, but parents teach them how to drive. This thing should be put in the vehicles of all cars; not just young kids if you think they`re the only problem.

Honestly, I think this "mykey" will do nothing when I see 10 cars all rear ended on the freeway every other week.

Again, maybe it`s a California thing...

10 years later, ford will come up with a chip that you put in the teenagers` brain. settings include:
limits 2 swear words per day
limits vocal volume
manages the level of hate towards parents
maximum 5 separate occasions of using the word "dude"
a chime every 3 minutes if said teenager doesn`t have wear a condom

"so what setting did you raise your kid at?"
"oh you know, the standard `obey the rules, never question the almighty Ford. You?"
"I got a special Bill O Reilly upgrade: Anti sense."
