What`s the difference between this and say...flying a black bird at mach 3 with the landing gear down and (obviously) super low altitude?

Seriously though, like can anyone explain please. Can that jet(or other jets like it) only reach those high speeds b/c of the lesser dense atmosphere at such high altitudes?

If I remember correctly I think it took like 30km to get up to speed, but 30+ kms to stop, kinda funny to think about.

It would be impossible for black bird to even get near the speed of sound and stay on the ground...unless maybe you chop off the wings. Its wheels probably burn off on concrete or sink into the dessert sand before it even gets near 250mph. Basically the black bird is design to fly so air will create lift at high speeds. On the other hand, the jet car is design to maximize air flow to keep the car on the ground.

The physical stresses on anything travelling past the speed of sound are immense - let alone those caused by the vibrations from doing it on land!

The wheels on the SSC were solid metal, no rubber at all, and as it travelled the downforce required to keep it on the ground meant it dug trenches up to half a foot deep in the salt flats. Awesome photos of the shock waves. :)

The reason there hasn`t been a faster land vehicle is because no company or government would invest money on such a project.
There are no practical applications, and this is purely for the sake of having a vehicle that fast. That`s why this project was privately funded by a rich guy, for fun, and the only purpose of this vehicle was to go fast for that run and it wasn`t like the Blackbird, which was designed as a spy plane but also happened to be fast as a side note.

^^ For example, a US government funded project for testing missile impacts used rocket sleds on the ground that got up to mach 8 or 9. So,, when you have a REASON (this case being national defense) to spend alot of money on something, it always gets done better and faster.

Interesting note: The speed of sound with-in our atmosphere can vary as much as 120MPH, 760MPH @ sea level and 660MPH @ 35,000ft as such, attaining the speed of sound at ground level is much, much more difficult.

They honestly didn`t know if the vehicle or driver could survive the sonic boom if and when it would occur. Normally A sonic boom disperses, however; on the ground it shocks back up into the vehicle.

^ no dickhead the recorded world record speed of 763.035 is an average of two timed runs through marked mile sections on it`s runs. On the 2nd of the two it reached 771.402mph but this was outside the marked mile markers.
