Laser Discharge

I work as a laser-operator. This is my machine being calibrated. We calibrate by discharging and measuring the alignment of the resulting piercing.

It`s a plastic cube. The machine is an Amada LC2415 with a Fanuc 1500b laser. (1.5Kw) It primarily produces stoves of the brand heta, but give me a .dxf-file and I`ll cut it within 6mm steel (3mm stainless)

it looks like it burnt both sides of the cube, but the middle is left intact. can you explain how/why this occurs?

^ the video is misleading, there were three shots of various power, but only one was worth publishing. The big piercings are 0.4 second discharges at 15% power while the little surface-burn just visible at the very end of the video is the 0.1 testshot you saw.

^ lmao, no chance, but this machine can actually pierce a fingernail without damaging the flesh beneath ... it`s all about focusing the beam correctly :D

but hey, I could max out pierce duty on a 5mm plate, that makes a nice spark.

The same thing happened when I crammed my laser pointer in a toaster! Well... I woke up in a hospital and the house had burned down... so it MUST have worked! Try it!

So I`m to understand you can get that king of kick out of 1.5kW? Is the zap awesomeness to power input ratio arithmetic? If so, when can I see this thing used to demo old buildings, or some other species of wicked kaboom-ness?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of qualifications do you need to work with stuff like that? An engineering/physics degree of some sort I`d imagine.
