that`s an aussie road train. 3 semi-trailers drive to outside adelaide, 2 of the prime movers go back, and the 3 trailers head on north across the desert to darwin (or vice versa). more than 3000km of straight road across the desert, with only alice springs to break up the journey. i think that`s the only road they`re legal on, never seen one near the east coast or going west.

Road Train was concept invented by an Australian called Kurt Johansson. Modern Road trains range up to 25 meters to 40 meters (roughly 82 feet to 131 feet), over 200 tonnes. They are only allowed to operate remote areas. The trailers are dropped of at depots, from there the trailers get delivered by individual Engines to the urban areas.

First World record was set by a 610 meters long (roughly 2000 feet), pulling 45 trailers long road train. Second record was broken by a 1.23 Km (4052 ft), 87 trailer long Road train. Third record was 1.4 km long (4731 ft) long road train. The current record is 1.47 km long (4837 ft), 112 trailers long road train.

As far as I know the concept was taken aboard by US and Canada, just not as long as the Australian road trains. If you see one on the road stay out of the way. These buggers get the most priority on the road. Since some need more than 1 km to come to stand still, even with their multiple hydraulic brakes. These Road trains come with mammoth engines. Some with more 20 cylinders and quad-turbo engines.
