they do exactly this to simulate meteor impacts. By doing this thousands of times in miniature you get a better understanding of what happens on a larger scale. This gives us better math to figure the size and weight of objects that have left craters on the earth and what damage is possible if a large asteroid or comet were to collide with the earth in the future. It also shows what subtle evidence may be present to help us look for previous impacts that have had most of their evidence eroded away by the active earth surface.
