How is it that 8 bit video games have some of the best classical music ever written?

no sound design to hide behind, not even a single instrument with rich overtones, reduced to only the principles of what makes music work and nothing to hide behind.. so the musical ideas had better be good! 5/5 for one of my first favorite games, even if it gets little love from the avgn, simon`s quest has the best memories associated with it for me.

gnomestealshoes: It`s mainly due it`s simple nature and in the fact you have to do either a catchy or an "easy to ignore" tune when making a game.

Easy to ignore isn`t that hard to make, but it would make NES games much less fun since music effects us even if we don`t actively listen to it. With a catchy tune you have something which shifts attention from the bad graphics and rather noisy bleeping sounds the gameplay produces.

Today we want to focus more on music which is just barely recognizable even if you`ve been playing the game for hours.

Uuh.... not sure if it`s only me.... or maybe the video is out of sync.... but it seems like quite a LOT of his key presses don`t match the sound. Harder to notice with his right hand... but easy to notice with his left.

You must have not been born in the 80`s, back then the graphics were great! NES had alot more detail then my Commodore 64 or Atari 2600 in fact i think Castlevania 2
was the main inspiration to Castlevania symphony of the night.
Bleeping sounds were "rad" cant ever get the sound of mario`s coin`s or the sega theme "Saaagaaaaa" at the begining of games out of my head.Point said be glad we dont have to use are imaginations just to make that Green square (player one tank) really look like a tank. Now excuse me i have to go talk to Ug back at Camp Anawanna apparently i have to get it right or pay the price...

Megaman 2 has the greatest game soundtrack ever concieved, aside from 3 and Super Metroid. Link to the Past doesn`t come far behind, either.

I know, I know. Symphony of the Night comes close too. It came out after these classic, remember.
