LOS GATOS, Calif. -- A six-year-old Los Gatos girl whose hand was severed in a very unusual accident is recovering, and may regain motion in her hand, thanks in part to quick help from a passer-by.
Erica Rix was playing with a jump rope in the back of her mother's car two weeks ago when the end of the rope, fluttering out the window, caught on the car's axle. A loop of the rope tightened around the girl's wrist, slicing off her hand.
Jim Bailey, of Saratoga, was driving by when he saw the girl's mother calling hysterically for help. He made a tourniquet to slow the blood flow from the wound. Another driver called emergency services.
After 10 hours of surgery and nine days in intensive care, Erica Rix is recovering at home.
