Lawyer Accepts Lap Dances As Payment

A DeKalb lawyer was suspended for 15 months Thursday for arranging to have a female client perform nude dances for him in exchange for credit on her legal fees, a state commission said.

Scott Robert Erwin, a lawyer since 1980, will begin his suspension Oct. 7, according to the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, a branch of the state Supreme Court that conducts investigations into attorney misconduct.

Erwin represented the female client and several of her family members on several different types of cases.

The relationship began in 2001 at Heartbreakers, a Compton, Ill., strip club where, after Erwin talked to an exotic dancer, both realized they had talked to each other over the telephone about some pending legal matters, according to the commission's report of the allegations.

Erwin agreed to represent her on several legal matters, and they mutually agreed that she perform nude dances for him in his office as a way to cut down on the legal fees, according to the report.

She claimed that on several occasions from February to June in 2002 she would go to his office, remove her clothing and dance for half-hour sessions. She also claimed that Erwin continued to go to Heartbreakers, where he would pay the $15 entrance fee but wouldn't pay her for performing nude dances.

She claims during the dances at his office, he inappropriately touched her, the report states. He denied any such touching in police interviews.

Erwin credited her for $534, but she complained because her bill had reached $7,000, the report states.

The woman went to DeKalb police in 2002 about the sexual assault allegations, and an investigation led to a hearing before the DeKalb County grand jury in 2003, seeking a charge of criminal sexual assault. The grand jury did not vote for an indictment, the commission report states.

When reached by phone Thursday, Erwin declined to comment. He has no prior disciplinary action from the state. He was a former chairman of the DeKalb County pro bono committee of the DeKalb County Bar Association, according to the commission documents.

The woman, who is no longer an exotic dancer, is married with three children and is a real estate agent, according to the report. Source

how is this illegal? she provided a service he compensated her.

btw this is my business essay

The Foundation of American Business

In my opinion, the foundation of American business started with Tobacco. It was the first product mass advertised, mass consumed, and mass produced in America. It has been a moneymaking cash cow for hundreds of years. Tobacco was the only big product that withstood the test of time and made billions of dollars.

Before the oil barons and the technology boom there was the Tobacco industry. Tobacco was created buy 3 major companies, PHILIP MORRIS, RJ RENOLDS, and British American Tobacco (also known as big tobacco). They introduced tobacco to the American population buy giving it out for free. Knowing that it was addicting, people got hooked and wanted more. Tobacco made there money from there new addicted customer’s future purchases.

Although now it is common knowledge that smoking is bad for you, for about 400 years nobody knew. The cowboys chewed it, The Indians got addicted to it from the Europeans, and now it is now used as a status symbol by rich socialites.

Until the 1900’s you couldn’t go without being subjected to tobacco. Bars, restaurants, clubs, grocery stores, and even schools had cigarettes and chewing tobacco readily available for purchase. They had a preverbal monopoly on people’s lives. If you smoked you were considered “cool” and once you started you couldn’t stop.

In the end, Tobacco helped create the big businesses of today by showing them how to be successful. Though excellent marketing and a powerful product, tobacco was able to create a moneymaking business. Tobacco companies set the standard in business excellence until there untimely demise in the 1900’s. Although there still hanging in and will not be going away in the near future.

The man did nothing wrong it`s just a throw back to the old ways of doing business, you perform a service for me I perform one for you, very simple.

"Erwin credited her for $534, but she complained because her bill had reached $7,000..."

basically she performed lap dances to offset her bill and then claimed misconduct to get out of the rest of it and the lawyer is the one who gets punished? that`s bullshit.

^ that sounds more realistic...I know tons of attorneys who exchange legal services for their clients services....car repair, construction work, gift cards to restaurants....

it sounds like she was OK with everything until it came time to pay the bill....but then, the lawyer should have known that he was going to get hosed in the end of this bargain

it`s about the same as defending a guy who got caught passing bad checks and taking payment in the form of a check, it`s just the kind of thing that a lawyer should be able to sniff out immediately...

A woman servicing a man in the nude, with inappropriate touching and possible hanky panky, in return for his professional services is called marriage.

They were merely having pre-marital relations, and if that is illegal, then the law is cockblock.

i don`t see what`s wrong with it, bartering is the most basic form of exchange. ppl in rural areas trade services for farmers with produce, etc. whats wrong with trading legal services for a stripper with lap dances? lap dances aren`t illegal. the only way it would be "wrong" is if there`s a rule in the state licensure that prohibits this kind of trade.

i can see how many may object to this as "immoral" but unless the profession BARs this (see what i did there?!), then i don`t see it as illegal.

Would it have been alright had the woman paid the lawyer money for his legal help and the lawyer used that same money to get lap dances from her?

It`s the same thing!

lol..i like how everyone is hating on the stripper...half hour dances and strip club dances for free for god knows how long...this lawyer clearly taking advantage and seeing how long he can ride it out..

for those of you who say its okay to exchange lap dances to cover legal costs...would it just as well be okay if it was prostitution? where do you draw the line?
