Where is the champion? Well, the best they have is Ron Paul.

He`s religious, but at least he believes so strongly in freedom that he won`t impose it on you or anyone else.

But Maher is right, politicians suck because so do the people of the country. Sorry, Americans, I get along with you in every day life, but you really do need to step up your game.

This is the problem with Bush`s no child left behind policies. It`s making a whole generation that much stupider. Just wait till they start to vote. Then all hell will break loose.

Even as a Christian I would have to agree with almost everything Bill says in this video. My only criticism is that he and others like him often put up a lot of straw man arguments. Most of people he interviews in his movie are fundamentalists who take the bible literally. It`s easy to ridicule them but they don`t represent all Christians.

^ But you could say that people who take the Bible literally are the only true Christians. If you`re not a fundamentalist then you pick and choose from the Bible, subjecting it to your own sense of morals.

You don`t kill people who work on Sundays do you?
You don`t treat women as currency do you?
You don`t think that god hates gays do you?

Then how can you believe that the bible is the infallible word of god, if you yourself acknowledge that it is full of shit?

Tajumera:

The first problem with your argument is that the large majority of Christians are not fundamentalists. To say that only a minority of believers are believing correctly is a little silly when you consider that it all hinges upon believing in something that can`t be proven with logic or science.
And recognizing social and cultural differences between the people who wrote the bible and modern Americans is not to say that one can`t believe in the Christian God and Jesus Christ, and be baptized into the Church (the actual definition of a Christian).
Most Christians are aware that the Bible contains laws, parables, proverbs, and even pseudo-factual information that conflict with one another, yet they still believe that it is the Word of God. Most of the conflicting data is explained with the idea of metaphor and symbolism -- the stories are just that, and they serve the purpose of teaching a lesson about faith, honesty, virtue, etc. The rest is explained with the notion that the bible is not written BY God (i.e. God spoke to Bob, and Bob wrote down what God said to the letter). Instead, the bible is "divinely inspired," which means that God inspired certain individuals to write things that captured the message that He wanted to be presented (i.e. Moses wrote the history of the Hebrews escape from Egypt, the Levites wrote their Laws, and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John wrote about Jesus). The simple fact that humans are imperfect explains the outdated notions, historical inconsistencies, and overzealous use of the word "thou." Yet the book is still divinely inspired, and is therefor the Word of God. The difference that most Christians recognize is that the men that wrote the book are fallible, but God is infallible.

Also, you should try not to reference a few verses from a very small portion of a much larger work and then claim that the entire work is full of shit. It`s the same thing the Intelligent Design supporters are trying to do with the Theory of Evolution, and it`s a prime example of rhetoric that has no place in logical debate.

^^^ You are very well spoken idiompeddler I have but a few issues with what you said.

"the stories are just that, and they serve the purpose of teaching a lesson about faith, honesty, virtue, etc."

Maybe you didn`t mean that faith is a virtue but I must make this distinction. Faith is not a virtue. Faith is not necessary for virtuous acts, in fact faith often leads people to adhere to destructive dogma.

My case and point:

The Fact of Stem Cell Research.

Stem cell research is one of the most promising areas in biology to generate medical therapies and it is not being funded at the federal level for reasons that are religious. Because we have this idea based on rather vague notions of theology that in every fertilized ovum there is a soul and, you can’t privilege the interest of one soul over another. Ever if one is in a petree dish and the other is in a man with Parkinson’s disease….
