Thanks for the vid & link truth-is-the-nemesis. Watched the whole thing, and it was good. Hitchens opponent this time, Alister McGrath, seems like one of the genuinely nicer "nice guy" christian types too. Kind of a wee bit odd in mannerisms, almost like some strange understated pompousness, or some over-ordered OCD leaking out. But you have to give the guy full credit for having caught a very kind and reasonable version of the Christian flue, rather than some ugly fundamentalist strain as your title suggests. His whole argument feels like a wet paper bag surrounding his otherwise clear and ethical thinking though, that leaves me wishing he would just reach out and tear it off, to emerge into the full bright light he does so obviously understand.

I would say that Alister`s argument boils down to the idea that Christianity is like some nice and harmless rose coloured glasses, and he likes that tint as a daily filter through which to view and better grasp the world. Kind of like a voluntary artwork of thought, that is unarguably his right. And I certainly won`t argue that he has an uncommonly nuanced position when it comes to developing that `art` in an honestly ehtical and reasonably rational way.

Still, Hitchens is a razor chainsaw bladed bulldozer with a lazer beam. Wet paper bags be very weary in his path. I cherish his tireless demand to the religious for full account. And I love his dogged independence. He is a true beacon for freedom and honesty of thought.

I`m goint to post up another debate, Richard Dawkins with Alister McGrath. I have only watched the first ten minutes or so, but it`s looking good.

Cheers.

the old Sodom and Gomora argument. runs something like this "God punishes victimless sins such as homosexuality, but individual freedom to go to hell is not enough, God will destroy a whole city with me and you also, therefore we should turn on the sinners to prevent an earthquake or other disaster."

I have been an Atheist since, well since I could make up my own mind. It was a fact that I used to keep to myself when meet religious people, but I am finding that we need to be polity more out spoken about these issues.

This man doesn`t debate, he slaps down the opposing side with pure logic. It`s like a kick in the balls to the fundies.

Um.. while I agree with most of what he said, this wasn`t a debate.

whilst i would consider myself a spiritual person i wouldn`t say religious, because that would denote some sort of institutionalization which of course we all know is another word for brain washing..
I was raised a catholic but as soon as i was old enough to think for myself i soon realized that another person shouldn`t tell me what "I" believe.. I think all free thinking people would agree

There can be no real peace in a world with religion, because those who believe they are just will seek to punish those who they believe wicked

I voted this down only because you failed to actually show a debate, I think Hitchens had a bunch a good points but the poster let us all down by not uploading the full video.

It amazes me that any of the faithful agree to debates with Hitchens, Dawkins etc. Debates are by their nature exercises in logic. You will get creamed.

To hell with the fundies.. I have friends that are gay (queer if you want to call it that) and I sure as hell dont live a godly life hence my name..I drink, I smoke cigs and occasionally weed.. What matters is you treat others well, you treat others with good will and try to live a good life and help others in need.
