Q&A Richard Dawkins at UC Berkeley 2/2

On Saturday, March 8th, 2008, Richard Dawkins gave a lecture on The God Delusion during his US Tour. The event took place on the UC Berkeley campus in Wheeler Auditorium, and was completely sold out. A line of hopeful attendees stretched around the side of the building, waiting to see if there would be any 'no-show' tickets at the last minute! This is the Q&A session after the lecture.

Three points I want to point out here.

Firstly, in this day and age, no one is forced to be of any religion belief, (well almost no one). There are a lot of beliefs (including atheism, or non-believing)out there with preachers for each group. And I think that how you are raised or what you are taught in school will not be a major factor on your belief as an adult. Most atheists were raised christian and a lot of religious people were raised in almost atheist houses. (well, if you are a sheep, then it does not really matter in which group you fall.)

Secondly, I think that instead of each group discussing why the others are of false belief, they should focus on why their belief is the true one. You think Christianity is the true way, prove it. You think you are the chosen people of God, tell me why? And don`t use people lives and manners as a gauge of how true your belief is (e.g. charity, wars,..etc). We have a saying that "Righteousness is not what "good men" do, but Righteousness is first known, then it decides who "good men" are." I guess in that sense, atheist don`t have anything to prove since they don`t ask anyone to believe in a certain God.

Finally, using scientific methods to disprove a spiritual belief is as good as using a belief to disprove a scientific theory/fact. Saying the earth is flat because your book says so, is as good as saying there are no such thing as spirits or karma because we cannot measure it.

^ That`s my take on the subject. Well, feel free to discuss or insult, depending on your intellectual ability :)

the subject of creation or evolution should not be involved in politics. Evolutionists will not have their way for a very very long time because catholics, evangelical christians... have a loud voice.
Strange how the compaints are heard louder more clearly than the compliments.

@ Nightmare08:
1. All scientific studys show that the culture you are born into and the your households beliefs will have a large impact on what you believe. Its not a matter of `in this day and age no-one is forced`, its a case of your parents beliefs and cultures will impact your beliefs as a child.

2. Athiesm constantly has to show why it is true. No other religions can, as they only have there `holy book` to back up there claims.

3. You cant use scientific methods to disprove spiritual belief but you can directly disprove the claims it makes about the real world. There could be a christian God up there which we cannot disprove (or prove) but what we can do, is disprove all (or the majority) of claims in the bible.

@MysticMan
Evolution won the war against creationism/intelligent design along time ago. Its only recently lost in afew states in America where creationism is now taught side by side with evolution as `Science`.

1. Why, it may affect you initially, you will eventually form your own believes and opinions, won`t you? For example, if I am born Christian, would I keep going to Church, be an active member, and search for a nearby Church where ever I move just because I was raised Christian? If that is the case, then I can`t see why more and more Christians are converting to other believes.

2. Actually, Atheism does not claim a given believe to prove it is true or not. Atheism is based on the fact that all believes (in God) are NOT true. So, actually, preaching Atheism is debating why other religions are false, right? Nevertheless, I also agree that a holy book of a religion cannot be used or accepted as a proof of its Truthfulness.

3. I completely agree with you here. Again, when the bible (or any holy book for that matter) claims something related to the real/physical world, then it could and should be disproved by science. I am specially provoked by the 5,000 (or 10,000) years old earth thing. I mean, come on.
