President Musharraf Resigns To Avoid Imp...

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a key Western ally in the fight against terrorism, has resigned rather than being forced out by his political enemies.

The former chief of the army announced his decision in a televised address last night - hours before Pakistan's Parliament was to have launched impeachment proceedings against him.

A grim-faced Mr Musharraf said he was resigning to "bring the nation out of turmoil".

"Impeachment would destabilize the country," he said. "After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign."

Mr Musharraf, 65, who seized power in a military coup in 1999, had been under intense pressure from the governing coalition to step down before it launched the first impeachment proceedings in Pakistan's 61-year history.

His resignation clears the way for the four-month-old Government to choose a new president.

But there were intense concerns in Washington that Mr Musharraf's departure would open a new era of instability in the nuclear-armed country of 165 million people.

His announcement was greeted with demonstrations of joy in the streets of Lahore and other cities, and was hailed by the son of slain former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

"After the martyrdom of my mother I said that democracy was the best revenge - and today it was proved true," said 19-year-old Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People's Party.

Asif Ali Zardari, his father, is the effective chief of the PPP and is reported to be in the running to replace Mr Musharraf.

The party won the most seats in elections in February and now leads a coalition government that also includes the party of Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister ousted by Musharraf.

Mr Musharraf's popularity plunged last year after he sacked opponents in the Supreme Court and called a state of emergency. He was severely weakened when his political allies were trounced in the February elections.

He was also backed into a corner by the resurgence of Islamic militants in the tribal areas along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, who launched a wave of attacks last year that left more than 1000 people dead.

Pakistanis gathered around television sets across the nation last night to listen to a tired-looking Mr Musharraf deliver an hour-long speech, in which he said he had helped establish law and order, improve democracy and human rights and boost the country's stature. "On the map of the world Pakistan is now an important country, by the grace of Allah," Mr Musharraf said.

He dismissed accusations of misconduct that would have been on a "charge sheet" against him. "Not one charge against me can be proved," he said.

He concluded emotionally, raising his clenched fists and declaring: "Long live Pakistan!"

Responding to the announcement, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last night paid tribute to Mr Musharraf, saying he had been "a friend to the United States and one of the world's most committed partners in the war against terrorism and extremism."

She urged Pakistan's political leaders to "redouble their focus on Pakistan's future and its most urgent needs, including stemming the growth of extremism".

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown also praised Mr Musharraf, but said relations with Pakistan did not depend on one individual.

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith called for political stability in Pakistan. "It is important that the Government of Pakistan now moves with purpose to tackle the security and economic challenges facing the country," he said.

India declined to comment, with the Foreign Ministry describing it as an "internal matter" for Pakistan.

A whisky-tippling moderate, Mr Musharraf won praise for trying to tackle militants and for presiding over record economic growth. He has also shown steely nerve in what has been dubbed the world's most dangerous job - he escaped at least three assassination attempts.

He joked about leaving the running of the country to the Government and playing tennis and golf instead, but his real sport has been holding power. He has named as role models Napoleon and Richard Nixon - two men known, among other things, for their tenacity.

For the U.S. haters don`t get excited. the said new government party of Pakistan is backed by the U.S.

And Acer, there are Law and Order, Bush may be an idiot or retarded president but what specifically have he done that people can use to get him impeach? nothing. Musharaff attempted to assassinate his opposing political candidates and push his country into a state of emergency when he enforce a Martial Law.
If you really want to get bush impeached, very easy, go suck his cock so he can go out like Clinton, but you have to reconsidered if it even worth it cuz he going out in 4 months anyway.

Cipher, what exactly about the Lies Bush was caught on don`t fall in the category of impeachment? Besides, Impeachment isn`t based on breaking a certain law (if you are going to act like you know impeachment laws, at least know something about them). Anyone can introduce an impeachment directive, just like anyone can sue someone in civil court. A senator did just this recently but it likely won`t be heard until after the election so it is useless. If Clinton could get booted for lying about a blowjob, exactly what part of your logic says Bush can`t be impeached for lying about Iraq, Afghanistan and the other dozen things. And yes it is worth it, he deserves the humiliation and frankly, deserves to go to the Hague for warcrimes.

and rybear, the only pot smoker here is you. No one in the US will ever do anything about anything, for all that flag waving, the US remains one of the most lazy, ambivilent countries on the planet. Even the French know how to kick ass when their government fucks around with one of their stat holidays but Americans seem to have been duped into believing shutting up and towing the line is the only way to show you love your country. Ironic considering the country`s origins.

Wow Acer, I thought you would know something about the impeachment law if you actually calling me out about it... Appearantly you don`t.

Clinton get impeached for lying "under oath", the key words here are under oath, it`s called perjury, and it`s a violation of federal law. If you impeach a president just for lying then all 30 some U.S. presidents can and should get impeach...

And No, my friend, not ANYONE can introduce an impeachment charge. Only the House of Representative can bring impeachment charges against Federal officials particularly the House Judiciary Committee (Not a senator or the Senate it self for that matter, please prove me wrong). AND according to Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution a president can only get remove from office for ,in quote "Treason, High Crimes and Misdemeanors" NOT for lying in front of the press or his people, but surely doing so will make him lose popularity. And Even after the House succeed in bringing the impeachment charges in to the Senate, a president will have a fair trial just like every U.S. citizen, the trial will be hold by the U.S. Senate and oversee by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the U.S. and at the trial, they will need the constitutional two-third majority requirement to convict and remove an office holder. and you think all that can be accomplished just because someone like you can type at the comfort of your home "Impeach the president, he lie to us!", I`m not a Bush supporter, but you should be realistic. IMPEACHMENT AGAINST THE PRESIDENT IS NOT LIKE SUING SOMEONE IN A CIVIL COURT CASE, you made me laugh when you make that statement lol.

And Acer, can you explain why the U.S. is the most lazy and ambivalent country in the world yet we have the most powerful military in the world with the most advanced technology, in the list of 100 most prestigious universities in the world 50% of them are located in the U.S., and ironically we also have the most Olympic medals in history. hmm let see, both brain and brawl? I think the U.S. have everything and guess what that including haters ^^

vote me down, everything i said are facts, but I know my opinion will always fall in the minority on Spikedhumor since there are so many U.S. lovers here!
