Kevin Kelly: Predicting the next 5,000 ...

At the 2007 EG conference, Kevin Kelly shares a fun stat: The World Wide Web, as we know it, is only 5,000 days old. Now, Kelly asks, how can we predict what's coming in the next 5,000 days?

Well, this was certainly amusing, however, I think predicting the future of the internet is like predicting the weather the next 5,000 days: It just can`t be done.

I dont like the transperancy thing, most people think Im a nice sweet person, I dont want the world to know about all the hard core porn I watch.

In fact I think this guy is wrong, I think in 5000 days the internet will become one big slutty hoar, and there will be a chip inserted into our brain that pumps our favourite porn into our brains 24/7.

and 10000 days, all computers will come with a human robot "hand" extension that wanks you off, or an optional girating finger entension for the ladies and gays.

I think the direction of this concept is fairly steered towards our future, the idea of global unity is pretty much implemented since the development of WWW (refer to Six Degrees of Separation). This technological advancement will happen sooner or later, this machine as suggested "The One" will be the center of everything. My only concern about the centralization is too much "transparency", soon the government can monitor everything we have done or will do. This machine sounds like the brain of Big Brother, pretty scary stuff.

I think this guy is one of those over enthusiastic guys who aren`t actually scientists. if you look up his biography on wiki, he`s already had some whacky claims about his life experiences and just because he is a founder of a magazine ( which isn`t a very technical one, but rather a magazine that seems to squeal at any new handheld gadget) doesn`t mean he is a computer science expert or legendary programmer.
Also, the fact that he throws around meaningless numbers is not very encouraging.

But here`s what I think will happen to his theory. He says the internet will become a huge pool of all of humanity`s knowledge. He even makes the comparison that the net is something like a human brain.
The internet is actually much less interconnected that than. Not every computer is directly and freely connected to another. Large swaths of the internet are owned by companies like Level3, Comcast, AT&T and others. Tier 1 companies own all the large junctions and connections in the internet (because they built them). So instead of having each cellphone be a portal into what Kelly imagines to be a gigantic sphere of awesomeness, I really think that it will just be another paid service window , but of course the service provided will be much more vivid and colorful than it is today.

But mainly, the guy seems to think the internet is ONE MACHINE .Like a single computer... This is not how the internet works ! The internet is simply put : a place where people decide to pay others to let them connect their computers together. You don`t see interstate highways turning into a single MACHINE do u ? You don`t see market places, which grew into towns, and then metropolises acting as some sort of single machine do u ?

^rofl greenbud

^^mph_ragnarok what you said is essentially the same thing tho. a highway is a pathway for many users to have access to it.
i think what the guy refers to is one mega highway (if we are being metaphorical here). for example, one lane in a highway is part of a greater entity. and that greater entity is part of a greater entity... etc.

who knows. thers no prediction. i hate people who try predict things that are consistantly evolving. DID ANYONE PREDICT GOOGLE? Did anyone predict video was going to go onto the web and in such a fashion that it is accessible (now) by anyone with a basic set computer + flash. i think trying to predict too far into the future is too difficult. predicting it short term is possible but what the people who predict things forget is that its all these little impacts that add up and eventually further evolve the internet.

the safest evolution of the internet theory is quite simple in my perspective. the more computing power and bandwidth the more complex applications and the system becomes.
