One thing he didn`t add was that during the stamping process, there is a potential of having mistakes. The odd bit turned from a 1 to a 0, on a music CD is not a big deal since it`s normally not computed, so you`d maybe get an off note, but on a Game CD it`s a very big deal. The way around this is that they represent an 8 bit string or byte, as a string of 12 1`s and 0`s, not just 8. By incorporating the other 4, error checking bits, the computer does a calculation on all the bits` and if during the check an error is found, it will shift one of the 0`s to a 1, or vise a versa...This is reffered to as, "Hamming Code".

Is it me or did the quality of cd`s fall to shit since their mass production? I have cd`s that i made when they first started making cd`s for home replication and as scratched up as they are tehy still played! and now if you get a fuckin eyelash on the disc if wont play for shit! its no wonder internet music is gonna take over, we cant make cd`s that last for shit.

Yeah, my dad`s Boston CD still works despite the wear and tear of 2 decades. This mass produced crap isn`t made to last. I suppose that CD makers are ones responsible for people for the advent of hard drive data storage as the best means to contain information.
