`Major Discovery` From MIT Primed to Unl...

In a revolutionary leap that could transform solar power from a marginal, boutique alternative into a mainstream energy source, MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesn`t shine.

Well its not necessarily a GIANT leap since it is only combining two already known ideas.

well it could possibly be a giant leap if it`s as easy as he says. he mentioned a catalyst, whatever that catalyst turns out to be would determine how much of a leap this is.

the amount of hydrogen that`s accumlating in that water is a heck of a lot more than than what`s produced through the current method of electrolysis, which is also not that good coz it`s only about 15% (i think) efficient.

Yeah only 3 and more ideas combined would be considered a giant leap.

All this is way too complicated for me. All my appliances are wind-up.

I thought he was going to suggest storing energy as sugar.

i had an idea about copying the capillary action of water moving up plants. water evaporate out of plant leaves, drawing more water up the microscopic tubes in the cells of the stalk and the roots. what if there were mechanical "plants" with microscopic turbines in the capillary tubes that would generate electricity as the water was drawn up? and it could be a closed system where the water recondensed and cooled off and the process started over again. i don`t know crap about real engineering though so i don`t knwo if it would work. any engineers have comments?

^your on to something. Actually there is a similar idea.

Solar power hits a pool of water with a black bottom which heats the water. The water is inclosed and escapes through a tall tower in the centre. As it rises it rotates turbines inside the tower. The process also continues into the night as water has a high heat capacity. I believe the structure is wider than it is tall but the tower would be some 50 metres or more.

yeah, something like that, I don`t think it evaporates water, water is merely a medium to store the energy during the day. Who knows i read it a long time ago.

^ actually that idea is already being done but with plain old air, no water needed. it`s called a solar updraft tower.

If it works in salt water, great. If it only works in fresh water then it isnt a solution.

^ If it`s efficient enough, you could distill salt water into fresh and then use that, if it came down to it, but he did say the hydrogen and oxygen were recombined at night into water - maybe a closed or nearly closed system?

I want to see a demo to believe. The theory is very nice, and he is not the first to have think about this. Even a partial but practical demo such as storing energy to keep your house on for one night would make me happy.
