i think he was putting it on his head, then inflating it with the gas, then getting reeeally fucked up. he probably passed out from the gas (and that stuff can really knock you out) and couldn`t breathe because of the condom. maybe he just wanted to be high while he rubbed one out. It doesn`t mean it was for sexual gratification.

You can get a kick out of laughing gas, it feels like you are suffercating just a little bit and then you get a wierd trip for up to 30 seconds and its gone, pretty funny, goes well with beer.

Laughing gas is a a fairly common recreational "drug" in the UK at least, certainly amongst students! I think its probably legal aswell. Apparently it really fucks your head up after a lot of use, I wont be trying it.
