The beach where the turtle laid its eggs is a popular tourist destination, so local authorities have placed a small barrier around the egg site to protect the baby turtles. It is the first time in 16 years that there has been a confirmed sighting of a sea turtle laying its eggs in the area.
A Mainichi article earlier this month reported that record numbers of sea turtles have been spotting coming ashore at spawning grounds in Kyushu.
