This is good for people that have no idea, but I must ask:

What the hell did you expect when you signed into a contract where your job is to KILL PEOPLE? What are you expecting out of an institution training you to kill until you die or the enemy is dead? Especially this idiot`s comment:

Had to d/l the video to play it. Good post...actually one of the better ones I`ve seen on here about the military`s recruiting system. (Yeah, that may surprise some of those who`ve seen my posts in the past.)

In my younger days, I was planning on applying to the US Army as an NBC Tech (Nuke/Bio/Chem). After speaking with a recruiter, and having him "discover" that I already had about 7 years as an infantry reservist, suddenly the story changed to all the great benefits I would get for signing as an infantryman. "Oh, great chance for promotion, and I can offer you a signing bonus, etc, etc. Oh, I don`t know much about the NBC Tech trade, but as an infantryman you`ll blah, blah blah..." No thanks...heard those lies before.

However, some of the comments by the guy in the maroon shirt are totally out to lunch. The mass graves comment is wrong - I believe he`s actually reffering to the troops buried in their trenches when the engineers breeched the defensive berm. Saddam buried A LOT of people in his time. Also, the info he provides about DU shows he had no clue what he`s talking about. I`ve sampled for DU in Afghanistan...it`s more of a localized inhalation hazard around a burning vehicle...which is why you`re told to stay away from destroyed vehicles.

In the end, do your fucking research. It seems that people will spend more time doing research on a car they buy than their application for the military...and you`ll probably be in uniform longer than you own that car. The military certainly isn`t for everyone and it`s a huge commitment.

This is the most blatantly ignorant video I`ve ever seen in regards to the military.
"Most recruits get sent to a war zone"
No Shit, it`s the military, you joined up to fight wars for your country, justified or not.
"66% of recruits don`t get any college funding from the military"
Untrue statement, when in bootcamp, they ask you if you want to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, you sign up, you get it, the 66% comes from the idiots who don`t raise their hands, or choose not to use it.
"I was supposed to serve from 1988, to 1991, three years"
MOS(not the job kind) stands for Military Obligated Service, which is no less than 8 years, for any job, any branch. Ex: Serve 6 active, 2 inactive, serve 4 active, 4 inactive.
It`s on the contract you sign in black and white.
I haven`t been lied to, I haven`t had any surprises, well, negative ones anyway, the new GI bill sounds pretty nice, I`m not in Iraq, nor have I ever been.
Currently stationed in Hawaii for a tour of 3 years.

One recruit makes a great point, ages 17-18 you cant get a loan or buy alcohol but you can sign your life away to the military.

^^^ Actually you cannot join w/o parental consent until you turn 18 even if you do not leave for bootcamp until after your 18th birthday.

Also the point about the college benefits is not true. I served for 22 years and now that I am retired I have started going to college full time and every month I get a GI bill check.

The gentleman who says he didn`t know that he could be extended on active duty during times of war obviously did not read the contract before he signed it. It is written out clearly in the same size print as the rest of the enlistment contract. Below is alink to a copy of the standard enlistment contract every enlisted member signs when going into the military. Part 9 details conduct expected of military personel,
Part 9c details extensions during war, Part 10a talks about the 8 year enlistment requirement, Part 10b repeats the requirement for the 8 year contract and the possible extension during times of war. The recruiters may not tell you everything but unless these people are illiterate the information was made available. Never sign a contract until you have read the full thing. I know I did and I asked questions during the whole process. The recruiter has nothing to do with this part of the process. You sign the contract at the MEPS prior to taking the oath of enlistment.

I don`t think the US (or any country, for that matter) should have a standing army.

Countries should have a national guard or militia for defensive purposes only, with all adults - male and female - obligated to serve. Where they learn preparedness first aid and survival skills along with the safe handling of weapons that are kept securely at home, like the Swiss do. If you are a pacifist you should have the option of serving in some kind of peace corps, domestic or international.

If you want to "serve your country", then serve it by actually making it a better and safer place for you and your neighbours - not by invading other peoples countries.

This is stupid. I`ve done four years and what they are saying is not true for the vast majority. They are interviewing the same half dozen people over and over. My guess is they are representing the opinions of less than 5% of ex-military. Yes, recruiters are salesmen. Pay attention to what they say, ask questions and read the contract you sign and you won`t get screwed.
