I just wanted to start a debate, because in fact I DO believe a religious soldier is a better soldier, since the believe that there is a life after this one, makes you think you can die for "good cause" and still enjoy paradise.
What do you think?

imjac: Sure they`d be more effective, but I don`t think we should have to rely on our soldiers` ability to directly sacrifice their lives with such a carefree opinion of doing so. Essentially, I shudder at the thought of a nation having an army of lemming-minded `martyrs` at it`s disposal.

Oh sweet so you joined the army to help your country out then you sue them b/c of some stupid religious conflict. Athiests like you are complete bullshit. Maybe you should be concentrating on the war instead of crying about prayer. I`m not religious at all but if I was in Iraq I would pray with my brothers b/c it`s moral for you and them. I`m not going to sit there and cry b/c one day I decided i`m athiest. How does it feel all your life you believed and followed something and then one day just decided to complain. He also got an early leave from Iraq...do you know how many soldiers would give practically anything for that?

I am religious but I do not think a religious person makes a more zealous soldier.
Patriotism is reason enough to fight. The only difference between me and the Atheist is he believes he will end up as dirt after he dies.

I gotta call bullshit on this. Not the topic in general, but the degree to which this soldier is claiming discrimination.

I`m wondering if this is a combination of being thin skinned, in a combat zone and getting razzed by his buddies. As for the promotion, there are lots of reasons why people don`t get promoted. In the end - 3 sides to the story - his, the army`s and the truth.

In a place like Kandahar airfield, the church isn`t anywhere near to being the largest building or the busiest site on the base. When I was there, they had services, but it wasn`t like I ever saw anyone forced, or any prayer circles starting up by the Tim Hortons.

However, I`ve been in situations where some of the deep religious convictions of people in the forces have surprised me. For example, during a facilitated discussion about "Your personal Hero", I was SHOCKED at the number of people that had nothing more to say than "God and Our Lord, Jesus Christ". That was about 2/3 the room. (Mine was my father and Capt Kirk...who always gets the girl and ends the episode bare chested, having his shirt ripped off.)

I`ve also been put into situations where people around me are praying...dinners, drumhead ceremonies, etc...you just don`t drop your head and pray. During that time, all the atheists look around at each other and giving the "knowing" head nods. It`s actually kind of funny to see it happen.

In the end, an atheist`s finger pulls the trigger just as effectively as a Christian, Muslum, etc, etc. You don`t need God to be a good soldier, and your job is to make the other guy die for HIS God.

there are generals in the military that believe this is a crusade to bring Christianity to the middle east. There is always a religious basis to every war that has ever been fought.

Sounds to me like another crusade.
