Two hundred years from now, when we are a thriving global civilization beginning to colonize space, something about us will have changed; it must have; otherwise, we would have killed ourselves ten times over before this day ever dawned. We are fast approaching a time when the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction will be a trivial undertaking; the requisite information and technology are now seeping into every corner of our world. As the physicist Martin Rees points out, "We are entering an era where a single person can, by one clandestine act, cause millions of deaths or render a city uninhabitable for years. . . ,"25 Given the power of our technology, we can see at a glance that aspiring martyrs will not make good neighbors in the future. We have simply lost the right to our myths, and to our mythic identities.

Sam Harris,

THE END OF FAITH

I like his points, but in truth I don`t really decide on one or the other. I am more atheist then anyone, but I don`t see the point. If people want to believe in God, Buddha, Devil, Flying spaghetti monster, or funny Freddie that is their choice, not mine

^ I think the question, watersnake6, is about intervention. If you see a child getting beaten by a mugger, do you step in and do something about it? What about when you see a parent lying to their child in order to enslave it? Technically, if the child never knows the truth, it won`t know what happiness it is missing and relatively speaking it remains happy.

Religion is the same thing. It is a lie, developed by powerful men in an attempt to control the weak, and it still enslaves people today. Not everyone, granted. For some people it IS a choice. But a lot of people are forced to believe it, and when people are told to bash their heads against the floor several times a day, or to mutilate new born children or commit mass genocide, FOR NO CONCRETE REASON AT ALL, can you stand by and let it happen?

Personally, I say fuck no. Do something about it. Every human being deserves the opportunity to free their mind to the full extent of its capabilities, and every human being has the duty to ensure this freedom for others. Our curse is to uphold our blessing.

MAN I love getting stoned in the morning.

I believe the argument of religion enslaving mankind is best personified in a little PS1 and PS2 series called Silent Hill...where the people of Silent Hill are "happy and joyful" that "God" has come for them while you, the protagonist, is met by unbelievable horrors, both physically, emotionally, and psychologically. The town is considered their "heaven", while in truth, it is filled with a plethora of diabolical forces and sheer hatred towards the protagonist, coming ever closer to a much darker hell than anyone can imagine.

...Oh. I think I got carried away.

^ Nah, you make a good point, the Japanese know where its at with religion. Seriously, almost anytime religion comes up in a Japanese story, its evil.

This whole being a smartass thing is getting old for this old fart. Is there anything else he bitches about, or is he solely vexed on religions?

If I was forced to choose between this wino or Fred Phelps even though they`re equally retarded, I`d opt for Phelps cause there`s something about the way this douche talks that makes me want to push him off a cliff.
