i wonder if the AI part of the programing would be applicable to robots that need to learn balance and walking using many moving parts to get around

^ Yes, but that is an AI for the natural way of moving the body not the much more complex AI of the human personality, with emotions, character, and so on.

However, I find this type of AI to be even more important. Now, this can be used to build smart artificial limbs that move naturally, for those who lost them in war/accidents. It can be used to control a human body skeleton that can move your body if you are paralyzed due to injury or just a disabled person. I can think of a couple of more applications but not as useful...

Is AI real? Well, it`s in almost every game these days . . . so yeah, I guess it is probable soon. But if you`re talking about the sort of AI that will be able to interact with the world and begin to solve novel problems, then no. I don`t think personality has anything to do with AI, most human associated characteristics, such as emotions, are a result of intelligence failure, or random anomalies, but certainly nothing that resembles a strict definition of intelligence.

The sort of AI I think rawr is talking about is something along the lines of interaction and adaptation, you know like that crappy Robin Williams movie, Bicentennial Man. This video shows the result of an algorithm. The difference is between inference and calculation. The reason there are interesting and useful findings here is a result of starting with the "correct" information from which the result of introducing a new factor will produce something that better resembles human-like mechanics. This is sort of summarized in the title. The programmers are surprised because the result is not just convenient, but it`s a vast improvement.

I think you mean, to be more specific, "Using a human`s anatomy and physiology to make better animation."

yes its the same as the new starwar game, if you want more info its here naturalmotion.com i believe they have a free trial and it kicks ass! you can do some crazy stunts with the program and very fun to use.
