I thought they made it illegal to do this kind of psychological experiment after the original trials.

^^^It`s not illegal, it just usually doesn`t get approve by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

At this day and age there are still a lot of ignorant people. I learned of this experiment when I was in high school. I would have easily recognized that it was wrong or I was being decieved by the expert. Knowlege is power.

quote from user sato in another article :
there`s an interesting article i read recently about links to people who accept the bullshit like this they`re fed without question, check it out: http://thesop.org/index.php?article=12291
"The faithful take a leap of faith and accept as fact miracles and doctrines that defy the laws of physics.
As a result they become intellectually lazy in other areas of their lives, and they accept as Gospel the claims of politicians, used car salesmen and other charlatans without researching the veracity of what they are being spoon-fed."
i think it applies very well to this one to.
ps: the average adult population does not posses a very mature personality in reference to their age and they will act like sheep when faced with any sort of authority.
if ppl would use their rationality and think more on there own many of the worlds conflicts would just vanish because when you really look at what`s happening in the world today you notice that many ppl use the same actions to solve conflicts as a 14 year old would.

i`d like to know where they got the sample of subjects from...as if none of these subjects had never heard of the stanley milgram experiment before.
personally, myself and many people i know would have quickly recognized the experiment, therefore, creating a biased sample.
on top of that...i can`t help but laugh at how corny the recording of the learner was...if i heard that i would wonder "gee that doesn`t sound real" or "hmm kindof sounds forced"
on any note tho....these experiments (more notably the original) were very groundbreaking
oh and that mcdonalds couple were probably just a kinky bunch anyway

This is not an "excuse"... it`s just how we are programmed to think, we fallow the person in charge no matter what. Trust me, if you were in that position you would`ve done the same, it required a great deal of mental preparation not to follow orders from a higher authority. Even if you know it`s wrong and against all your moral values you will find it almost physically impossible not to listen.

Just try it for yourself, try not to do something your boss or an authority figure tells you to. Most likely you will experience total surrender or total defiance. Make it be a trivial thing, and notice how heroic you will feel if you will chose not to do it.

I think this stems from early in our childhood. Children are genetically programmed to follow orders of adults, they seek to be obedient towards someone they consider superior, every single last one of them. This is a survival mechanism that ensures adaptation through a preestablished example.

^^I have to give people at least the smart people of the world more credit than simply doing what they are told. If everyone did what they are told how do you explain revolts, public protest, etc. If more people are informed about this experiment, I think you`ll get a different result. What`s the point if your just going to use nieve, uneducated people in experiments.

maybe it is because not everybody understands the concept of accountability. whether it`s not being taught to them (possibly on purpose), or only 1/3 of the population is smart enough to understand it.

Always always always.. QUESTION AUTHORITY!
The most powerful question is "Why".
The most powerful answer is "No".

Think for yourself.

I think this experiment also points out other things too. I bet at least half of the 30% that ended the experiment could be considered Loners or Leaders. And I bet most of those who completed the experiment would be considered followers. I bet intelligence does play a role in the decision process but not near as much a person`s leadership abilities.

of course knowing about the experiment before hand would greatly diminish the integrity of the results. it`s all about the average person and what he/she might do in an actual situation where authority pressures one to commit immoral acts. the fact that this experiment was done before has no influence on the majority of society`s mindset. the fact that one might know about about the experiment does not negate the likelihood that that person may have followed the orders given by the one in authority.
