^That, and fund secondary military objectives through the back door, with the public perception of civilian work.

Well, it changed our space program for 30 years anyway...and not for the better.

Don`t get me totally wrong...the shuttle is one of the most awesome machines humans have ever engineered and I`d still love to witness a launch before it is retired, but it never lived up to its promise of lowering the cost of spaceflight with reuasable parts. In fact, the shuttle costs many times more to launch ($1/2 billion every time) than completely disposable rockets.

Insects figured out space travel millions of years ago. They flew all the way up there, and you know what they said? They said "What the... there`s no AIR!" Fuck this, why would anyone come up here? There`s no fucking AIR!"

So, what you are saying is that maintaining the satellites that provide us internet feeds, phone, data, television, and weather are just a waste of time to maintain?? There is no doubt that the space race was started by the military, but to live in today`s technologically advanced society, we need that program so that satellitescna be properly maintained. You might see it as a waste of resources, but I see it as a step forward in the evolution of man.

the SUV of the sky. designed to no other reason than to take satellites back down to earth for repair. which i retrospect not a cost effective idea. Not that I`m ragging USA, this was your Concord; a leap further than cost effectivness could warrent. You will never see a reusable spaceship than can bring back down that kind of poundage in your lifetime again.

~TechHead~: Thanks for displaying the ignorance of the unwashed masses when it comes to anything to do with space and spaceflight.

All of the types of satellites you just mentioned are placed in geostationary orbits 22,000 miles above the Earth where they can NEVER be reached by the shuttle (or any existing manned spacecraft) in order to be serviced. If those satellites malfunction, it`s actually much cheaper to simply build and launch a new one.

The Columbia disaster sealed the fate of the shuttle wrt to satellite servicing missions. The only reason the Hubble Space Telescope is getting a service mission in October is because of the huge outcry by the scientific community. If NASA was willing to let that multi-billion dollar observatory come flaming back to Earth, you think they really give a crap about your DirecTV feed?
